Meriden is a town in central Connecticut, United States. The population was 20,912 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Meriden County and home to the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and Yale-New Haven Hospital. The first European settlers in what is now Meriden were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1664. In 1714, they founded a small adobe farm on the site that became today's downtown Meriden. A store and post office were built there in 1820, becoming the first in what would become Hartford County. The town's first school was organized in 1825 and its first mayor was elected that year. Meriden grew rapidly during the mid-19th century as manufacturing based industries developed here including cigars, boots, saddles, carriages, clocks and other items for commerce and consumption; papermaking; carriagebuilding; dyeing plants; soap making; meatpacking; brewing beer for export In 1872–73 an act of Congress designated land around modern day New Haven as an experimental cotton plantation called "Hartford College" to be used for public education purposes only. This led to increased growth within4 miles (6 kilometers) of downtown Newington as people flocked to learn about new opportunities while living close by without having to leave their homes or face additional travel costs. At this time many businesses had brick buildings with one story with large windows which served as their headquarters while others occupied smaller storefronts on First Street between Union avenue and Market Square downtown where they processed goods coming into town from rural areas near Boston through retail stores such as John Wanamaker’s department store which opened on Water Street just east of Main Street/Union Avenue back when it still functioned more like an open market place than a shopping mall today). [As has been said] "the early days were all about getting things done." And so Threadneedle Lane became known locally simply as "The Avenue". On July 1st 1870 when Hartford College merged with Brown University making it America’s second collegiate institution after Princeton (and before Harvard), Threadneedle Lane acquired another name: “Yale-New Haven Hospital” because Yale President David Biddle decided that Hartford County should have its own hospital rather than rely solely on Newington General Hospital which he felt could not keep up with community needs due to its limited resources.] So important was Yale-New Haven Hospital that Dr Samuel Morse donated his old medical dispensary building located adjacent to Woodbridge Cemetery on Elmwood Road just south of Route 9 north of Interstate 95 until his death in 1865 so that patients could be taken care of privately without having their loved ones subjected to long drives away from home or late night visits from physicians who lived too far away also – another sign how highly respected these facilities were! From 1895 until 1965 when it moved across I-95 from West Windsor Village onto Park Avenue North it served both local residents (municipal residents) who continued using Side streets off main street while Patients were admitted through Orchard Road Gatehouse instead then through main gatehouse onto I-95) but also visitors traveling thrubound driving thru Hartford city limits en route back home after attending events at various colleges & universities such as American Museum Of Natural History etc…. With all this going on within walking distance (& very much along Main Street since most commercial activity took place along First Street), one can only imagine how busy & noisy it must have been inside those doors every single day! [ Today] you enter into DowntownMeriden via Prospector Place off MainStreet where you intersectwith State St., then go left down Prospector Place again until you reach Broadway Ave., turning right there ] DowntownMeriden contains over 50 businesses including several major retailers viz Sears Roebuck & Co.; Macy’s Inc.; JCPenney Inc.; Kmart Inc.; BJ’s Wholesale Club (); TD Ameritrade LLC (); Bankers Trust Company (); JardineMatheson LLP (); The Providence Journal Company (); Delmarva Power Corporation () ; Wegmans Food Markets Incorporated ()); GlaxoSmithKline plc (). Meriden is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 25,574 at the 2010 census. It is the largest village in Hartford County and part of the larger metropolitan area of Hartford. The name Meriden means "place where sweetmelons grow." The first European settlers arrived in 1624 when Thomas Edgebury and his brother-in-law patented 4 square miles (10 km2) of land on the south side of Bridgeport Harbor. They named their new community after John Meriden, one of their number. After many years of growth and development, the original settlement began to decline during the 17th century as new settlements were founded downstream along the Wethersfield River. However, by 1763 Meriden had become a thriving commercial center with warehouses and shops lining both sides of Bridgeport Harbor. In that year, it also became home to one of America's first Masonic Lodges – Masonsville Lodge No. 1 – which remains an active lodge today. During much of its early history, Meriden was mostly agricultural communities with some small manufacturing businesses conducted within its limits; however, over time these businesses have transformed into major economic engines driving Downtown Hartford's growth since 2000. One such example is Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company which has been headquartered in downtown for more than 80 years and employs over 4,000 people across Connecticut factories including two plants located in downtown Meriden! A variety of cultural events are held throughout the year to celebrate different aspects of local life like art galleries opening up shop or music festivals taking place throughout our town - it's always something happening here!
