Meriden is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 26,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Haven–Milford–Bridgeport Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlement in what is now Meriden was made on October 15, 1672 by Increase Mather and his family when they arrived from Rhode Island on the Mayflower. They named their new community after Mount Hermon in Judaea, where they had been earlier that summer on an agricultural trip organized by Lieutenant Colonel John Putnam. The original millrace ran through the town and remains a landmark to this day. In 1814 Meriden became part of Connecticut's newly created Hartford District and remained so until January 1, 1907 when it became part of the larger city of New Haven. In 1892, following a referendum passed by the people of both towns which sanctioned annexation by Bridgeport, Meriden joined Bridgeport as its second incorporated municipality within one year. In 1932, with World War II looming large and demand for military-related products high throughout Great Britain and Europe due to the war effort, General Electric founded its own electric company in Meriden (now GE Energy) which would become one of America's largest after Hiroshima/ Nagasaki. With this new industry growth came social changes as well- more workers started coming into town giving rise to better housing options for those living there as well as businesses starting up to provide services such as plumbing and carpentry not found elsewhere in the area at that time. This also led to increased incorporation rates among nearby villages making it easier for people who wanted their own municipality to form without having to go through multiple rounds of voting. It wasn't until after World War II ended thatMeriden began experiencing significant decline due largely to postwar suburbanization along with other economic changes around that time such as Teledyne Instruments moving their production line from Meriden into Sayreville NJ which caused almost all manufacturing jobs lost in that area over just a few years leading to even less job opportunities available for locals once these companies moved out while still leaving behind legacy effects such as higher property values throughout much of downtown Meriden today; however some have argued that most if not all fault for this can be laid at Teledyne's feet given their prior investment decision rather than anythingMERGENDAIR could do about it
