The town's history can be broken into several periods: -The early period from 1638 to 1768 saw Milford grow as a small trading post on the Mystic River. -Under Governor Samuel Grimshaw (1787-1828), Milford developed into a large manufacturing center with soapstone quarries, breweries, tanning operations, dyeing and printing mills. -During the American Revolution, many people from Milford sided with British forces and some were imprisoned or executed for treason. -In 1834, when Hartford was divided among New England states as part of the Compromise of 1850, Milford remained within Hartford County but lost its status as its own town. -In 1956 it became an incorporated village under state law No. 11354A which granted more autonomy to villages than towns while still adhering to certain town regulations such as fire protection and zoning controls
