It has been estimated that ammunition production in Naugatuck, Connecticut began in the late 17th century. The company that would become Winchester Manufacturing Company was founded by Samuel Winchester in 1792. Ammunition production continued until 1865 when it was stopped due to prohibition laws. The first rifles and shotguns were made with shot from powder that was created from lead shot and balls of other types of ordnance. Lead shot could only be used for hunting small game animals such as rabbits or squirrels because it was not strong enough to kill large prey like lions, tigers, or bears. Additionally during World War I various specialized munition types were developed such as Projectiles With A High Explosive Point (POW), incendiary shellshells/grenades/mortars etc., which helped increase combat effectiveness by causing significant collateral damage when impact occurred close proximity thereto

Naugatuck has been settled since at least 1635. The area now comprising Naugatuck was first explored by Samuel Sewall in 1638 during his travels through what is now Hartford County. In 1764-65 Captain John Smith charted and named many localities in this area including Naugatuck after he discovered a body of water lying between two hills about three miles from present day Naugatuck. Some early residents were Nathaniel Putnam (1655-1727), Nicholas Goodhue (1660-1741), Thomas Bryant (1668-1737), Elijah White (1672-1740) and John Dickinson (1712-97). Increase Mather became one of its earliest settlers in 1776 when he came with his family from Framingham, Massachusetts. He built a gristmill on Housetown Creek which became one of America's first commercial enterprises. Other notable residents include billionaire Sheldon Adelson who purchased 8% interest in Walgreen's pharmacy chain for $500 million in 2006 and Mayor Joe Ganim who was elected mayoralty twice before being elected into office for a third time on November 3rd, 2018 succeeding Democrat Dannel Malloy
Naugatuck was a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. It is now a suburb of Hartford. The town was named for the Naugatuck River and its tributaries. The first permanent settler in the area was Nicholas White in 1796. The first school in the area was built in 1805 by Rev. John Putnam, who also served as the first justice of the peace and alderman of Naugatuck. Erected on April 15, 1812 by Gov. Andrew Johnson to commemorate his victory at Gettysburg, Naugatuck became an incorporated village on October 1, 1825 under the name "Hartford". On November 3rd of that year it changed its name to "NaugatUCK", after General Winfield Scott's surrender at Appomattox Court House near Petersburg Virginia which ended hostilities between America and Great Britain following Napoleon's successful invasion of Europe.). The population of Naugatuck reached 2,500 during prohibition era; however this number dropped rapidly once Prohibition began enforcement on January 16th 1920 with enactment of New York State law by Gov. James A. Garfield (). In 1929–1930 there were riots taking place throughout upstate New York due to economic conditions caused by nationwide deflationary spiral; these disturbances were eventually suppressed without serious injury or damage when state police arrived on scene within minutes (). In 1951–1952 there was another series of riots beginning February 11th and continuing through March 6th when students at Iona College rioted against university policies which they felt violated their civil rights.; again state troopers soon arrived on scene and no injuries occurred.) On July 8th 1957 resident Artie Sheehan opened fire upon a groupof juveniles playing outdoors near his houseboat off Route 9 south of town; one victim died from gunshot wounds while three other children were also injured).
