By 1830, there were over 100 businesses operating in Naugatuck with a total payroll of $5 million annually. In 1836, General Nathaniel Lyon arrived in Connecticut with troops during the American Revolution and purchased land west of Hartford including part of what is now Naugatuck from John Morse. He renamed it Fort Lawton following his victory at Monmouth Court House over British forces on July 4th that year. General Lyon also established an arsenal here which served as artillery ammunition storage depot until 1859 when gunpowder became available through Europe following Napoleonic Wars ending with France's defeat at Waterloo. At this time Fort Lawton also became home to one of America's two secondary schools (the other being Yale). In 1840 Ulysses S Grant visited Naugatuck while campaigning for president; he stopped at Fort Lawton where he saw cannons stored inside an arsenal that had been converted into barracks for national guard duty since 1800 when America acquired its independence from Great Britain! Upon his return home Grant ordered all such cannon removed and replaced by muskets effective May 1st, 1841! Today those cannons still stand outside Fort Lawton/Wethersfield Public Library located within walking distance (1 block) of each other!
