When New Britain, Connecticut was founded in 1636, it was a small trading post on the southern borders of what is now Vermont. The area that is now Hartford had been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries and there were numerous hunting and fishing trips taking place throughout the region. One of the first Europeans to arrive in this area was John Winthrop, who settled down in what is now Hartford in 1640. After some time, he purchased land east of present day New Britain. This land included part of what is now Hartford Township and became known as Winthrop Town. By 1795, the population of New Britain had grown to over 5,000 people and with new development happening west of town along present day Route 12R, many businesses were established near where today’s downtown stands. In 1812, Colonel Amos Kendall built his home at 206 Elm Street which later became known as Kendall Hall. Over time this home grew into one of the most prominent homes in town and still stands today. In 1868, during the American Civil War, General Oliver Otis Howard asked Congress for permission to arm civilians in order to help quell guerrilla activity within their stateside territory (New Britain being among them). On October 25th of that year (eight days after Massachusetts General David Hale surrendered), Act No. 965 passed by Congress providing financial assistance to bountiful farmers volunteering their services as “private soldiers” against Confederate forces; these men were also given rifles and pistols by government officials for use against Northern troops should they choose to fight back on principle or out of patriotism. Since then airguns have become an important aspect not justof defense but also recreation across America due largely to public awareness campaigns like Operation Unabomber which saw gun owners take action with projectiles they made themselves at home from recycled materials found around their neighborhoods

One of town's most memorable landmarks is The Gilded Cage (a two-story iron cage that once held prisoners), which still stands today at 222 Main Street. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, New Britain became one of the most industrialized towns in Connecticut for its manufacturing base including paper products such as paper hats and postcards; plastics such as polypropylene bags; automotive parts; socks/shoes; cigars; baking powder; cornmeal flour; granite rocks for mortar production; glassware such as china services and Tiffany lamps; farm products such as hay, straw, eggs and applesauce In 1939–1940, local businessmen formed the Mid-Hudson Valley Manufacturing Company to develop a new heavy machinery plant on land west of downtown that would eventually become Bucknell University's engineering campus. The plant was designed by famed American architect Ivar Noren with construction starting in 1941 but never completed due to World War II military considerations. In 1957–1958 when Interstate 84 was constructed through Norwalk Valley it cut off much of New Britain's commercial traffic so many small businesses closed or relocated away from downtown because there was no other way to get products into town while bypassing I-84

In 1807, when Congress created new states out of parts of Vermont and Maine following the Louisiana Purchase (the United States acquired Louisiana and a number of adjacent islands), it included parts of northwestern Connecticut as well as southeastern Rhode Island and much of modern Massachusetts Bay Colony (later called Rhode Island). The easternmost corner then became known as Westchester County. On September 14, 1814, during President James K. Polk’s administration,[1] Ulysses S. Grant issued an Executive Order creating a new area comprising all or part of each state eastofthe Delaware River between Pennsylvania and Ontario—New England Territory.[2] This area became known as the Eastern District of Missouri;[3] within two years it had been enlarged to include much present-day Westchester County proper including most current day Bridgeport and White Plains areas;[4][5][6][7] around this time residents began to refer to their tiny piecemeal township “New Britain” while still calling their neighbor acrossriver Hartford “Hartfordshire” because they shared borders only with that municipality until 1783 when Westchester County was divided among several other townships in order to formWestchester County again.[8][9] In 1821–22 representatives from both townships met at Suffield House on Suffield Hill for proceedings which were reported back to Hartford about how best to administer their small enclave surrounded by larger neighbors who were more populous than they could ever hope to be: [10] They decided upon forming a board which would manage affairs such that growth would not erode their autonomy while also ensuring fair representation for those living within its boundaries
New Britain was a town in eastern Connecticut, United States. It was formed by the merger of two other towns, Newtown and Hartford. The first settlers arrived in 1636. By 1820, New Britain had a population of 12,000. In 1866, it merged with the neighboring town of Stamford to form the new city of Stamford-Newburyport.
