In 1764 General Israel Putnam organized an expedition led by Colonel James Longstreet into upper Connecticut Valley in search for arms supplies necessary for his war against Great Britain *. In 1768–69 Drury erected a white courthouse at present day Capitol Hill which served as seat of government until 1814 when it moved to Exeter *†*. Included among those Present were Nathanielansom Greenough who represented Windsor County (*= later renamed Danbury*) and Hemanus Beaumont who represented Middlesex County (*= later renamed Stamford). A committee was then formed with Greenough as chairperson to draft legislation providing for military protection *†*.
