On April 15, 1814, a group of men from New Britain, Connecticut set out on what would be the first successful scopic survey of the area. The English colonists built their first settlements in present-day New Britain in 1638, but these were not as successful as those at Amsterdam. They failed due to different factors including lack of water resources, Indian hostilities, cold winters and determined Native Americans who refused to sell goods or give away their land. However, English traders did establish some permanent settlements here from 1641 until 1768 when all British colonies were merged into the new United Kingdom under King George II. In 1804 New Britain became part of Hartford County, Connecticut which was then divided into two districts: one for easternHartford County (northwest of downtown) and one for westernHartford County (southwest of downtown). The district lines remain largely unchanged to this day. During World War I much activity took place at what is now known as Camp Upton which was located just east of town on White Sands Road between Prescott Road and Howell Road
