The first Europeans to arrive in what is now New Haven were Native Americans who called it Wapello Valley because of their discovery of pottery shards at that location in 1624. The area was first settled by people from Britain for agricultural purposes but soon developed into an important transportation hub due to its location on the river Thames. The town was renamed after General George Washington in 1784 after he relieved British forces from Boston during the American Revolution. After centuries of growth, New Haven reached its peak during the early 1800s with over 100,000 residents. However, this prosperity came at a cost: social unrest which led to sporadic violence throughout most of the decade. This violence eventually erupted into open warfare between local gangs and wealthy individuals which destroyed many businesses and homes across town. By 1810, however, enough development had occurred within New Haven to make it one of America’s fastest-growing cities; by 1830, it had surpassed Philadelphia as America’s largest town by population count. During these years,New Haven also experienced some interesting technological advances; starting with Christopher Wren’s construction of Yale University’s Collegiate Church (1688), new machine tools were invented that allowed for faster production rates for fabrics and other goods such as toys (the first commercially successful toy company was started here). Furthermore, John Winthrop – one of America’s earliest Puritans – arrived here in 1630 and quickly established himself as one of Connecticut’s leading political leaders; his mansion still stands today on High Street near Yale University Campus]. Winthrop aimed to create a society where “Godliness [would] be taught not only among those who should be trusted with government but also among all men who might come under its influence…to humble themselves before Almighty God through Reason alone could produce good government without any assistance fromabove.[1] However much progress New Haven made during this time period – both socially and technologically –it would ultimately be destroyed by two devastating fires that ravaged Hartford County in 1835-36: The Great Fire burned down entire blocks near downtown while simultaneously leaving behind extensive damage to buildings including churches (the Great Fire remains oneof Hartford County’s most famous landmarks). Although parts of Hartford City survived intact thanks to protective walls constructed around them following the fire], much else withinNewhavenwas Destroyed or ruined completely . These two catastrophes left behind a lasting legacy which continues to impact modern day life within our community today: One quarter century later America had yet another devastating fire when an electrical transformer blew up just outside town limits killing four people []". After these tragedies , officials decided that moving away from downtown would be necessary if Newaven ever wanted to experience ANY kind ol' stability again...so they did! And we've been doing just fine ever since! But back then things were pretty different actually - you could go out onto main street & buy anything you needed right there...or better yet get your hands on something really rare or hard-to-find right off someone's shelf! So yeah - things were more formal than they are now (& kinda boring too)
