During World War II, Altamonte Springs served as a military airfield for the United States Armed Forces during both the European and Pacific theaters of war. The airport hosted numerous Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers during World War II and remain one of America's most significant wartime airports today. In 1951, Altamonte Springs incorporated as a city under state law following an election campaign pledge by then-mayor John Fenton to do so if he were elected to another term as mayor. At that time, its population was just over 1,000 people; by 1990 it had grown to more than 6,000 residents due largely to annexation of nearby neighborhoods including Easton and Winter Garden. In 2006, Mayor Carlos Gimenez announced his candidacy for re-election but failed to win higher marks from voters within his own party or among independents who make up much of his support base; he finished third behind two other candidates receiving less than 50% of the vote total on November 7th 2006).
