Surtain, opened his business in what is now the Surtain Firearms Museum. He continued to produce quality ammunition until 1906. At that time, the town’s sole grocery store closed down and ammo production ceased completely. However, Apopka still has a strong legacy of being an Ammunition Manufacturing center due to its long history of producing quality ammunition products.

In 1844, a post office was established in Apopka and it remained in operation until 1907. During this time, Apopka saw some growth because of its location on the Eastern Railroad. In 1912, Apopka became part of Lakeland County and has been governed by a county commission ever since. The population of Apopka peaked at around 452 people in 1951 but has declined steadily over the years due to various reasons such as population loss due to moving out to suburban areas or retirement. However, there are still several businesses that continue to operate within the town limits which can be found near Main Street and Highway 509A. The history of Apopka can be traced back to when Captain James Aypopa explored this area during 1804 while on his way from Havana to Tampa Bay with supplies for General Jackson’s Expedition against Spanish forces nearby (now Pensacola). After his exploration he published an account of his journey called “A Narrative Of A Voyage round And Around Cuba” This document helped bring attention to this region and led to increased exploration which would later lead toApopka becoming a townspeople
In 1881, Apopka was founded by Captain John T. Sheppard and his wife, Sarah. The first post office in the area was established in 1882. With the growth of Apopka, a hotel and general store were built in 1906. In 1928, the town incorporated and began to grow rapidly with new subdivisions being developed. By 1960, Apopka had over 1,500 residents and was one of Florida's fastest-growing towns. In 1990, Apopka passed an ordinance that banned smoking in public areas.
