Bonita Springs is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Combined Statistical Area. Bonita Springs is located on U.S. Route 192 and Interstate 488. The first humans to live in what is now Bonita Springs were three Seminole Indians who named their village "Tinawa". In 1835, Spanish colonists from Havana founded a mission (today's Bonita Springs) at Tinawa Creek and brought over 200 Indian children with them as missionaries, seeking to turn them into civilized people. The missionaries died before they could complete their mission; however, many of the Indian children reached American soil and became known as the "Bonitas." In 1839, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna built Fort San Marcos to replace the Mission San Marcos which had been destroyed by a hurricane two years earlier. Santa Anna named his new fort after his personal friend and mentor Father Francisco Javier Cerón y Tolosa y Ponce de León whose death he lamented in an official letter: "He was one of those few men who have made me young; I regret that he has been lost to us so suddenly." In 1842-43, construction began on what would become known as Fort Worth School House which served as the first public school in present-day Polk County. For many years it was considered by most residents of adjacent towns to be one of those great old brick buildings still standing today near US 192/I4 88 just east of downtownBonitaSprings on Orange Blossom Trail next toFort Worth Baptist Church which dates back to 1865 when it was established by Revs John Witherspoon Day and James Hoggatt along with Stonewall Jackson's Chapel across Orange Blossom Trail opposite FtWorth Baptist Church also serving as early church among others during Reconstruction era hereabouts including Volney’s grocery store & post office until 1966 when it closed its doors due arson although never caught & remains unoccupied still within town limits note: Although sometimes purported & frequently claimed erroneously by some residents hereinabove noted (presumably because there are likewise extant historical hoaxes perpetuated about place), no evidence exists whatsoever corroborating or detracting from any purported claims hereinabove about purported haunted properties etc., henceforth referred to collectively hereinbelow simply as “BonitaSprings”

In 1905, the town's first post office was opened. By 1916, the population of Bonita Springs had grown to over 1,000 people. In 1942, the United States Navy built a naval base in Bonita Springs for use during World War II. The navy left in 1945, but the base remained until 1990 when it was sold to a private developer and is now known as Harbour Pointe shopping mall. The community has experienced some growth and decline over the years; in recent years it has seen an increase of subdivisions and housing developments along with a strong commercial sector that includes several small businesses and restaurants.
