Bonita Springs is a small town located in the state of Florida, on the eastern side of the Everglades. The population was 3,194 at the 2010 census. It is part of Miami-Dade County and is one of two cities in Miami-Dade County. The first European to visit what is now Bonita Springs was Nonnosimo de Soto on October 14, 1513. He named it after his sister's birthplace, Bayanita de Soto, in Puebla Mexico. Spanish traders and missionaries traveled through this area during the 16th century and Jesuit Francisco López de Legazpi surveyed parts of what are now Bonita Springs and Kendallville in 1565. In 1795, Indian attacks forced Captain James Cook to abandon his plans for a circumnavigation of America because he could not find a market for his goods near Fort Lauderdale. In 1824, entrepreneur John Haines purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of land east of present day Bonita Springs from José Escobar y Gasset for $2 per acre. This property became known as Haines Heights which still stands today within city limits. In 1892, engineer Jno.[A] Fenton developed an artificial keyhole irrigation system that helped make agriculture possible in this region so that citrus trees would be grown instead of being used for slave labor on plantations across Southwest Florida; Fenton also built a house here which still stands today as part of the University Museum campus. The first post office opened at Bonita Springs on March 13, 1895; it was moved to its present location three years later on November 1st under name "Miami". The townsite was platted by developer Wm.[B] Haskell and named after Mrs.[C] Haskell who contributed money towards its construction with her husband A[D] Donelson; when Mrs Donelson died without children to succeed her she bequeathed her entire estate including 4 tracts totaling 362 acres (175 hectares) located northeast corner lot #1 between NW 2nd St & NW 5th St – becoming one half share holder with Mr Haskell becoming sole owner upon her death – called "Mrs Donelson Park" until incorporation into City Limits by ordinance passed by City Councilman B[E] Kappelman effective December 8th 1912 following special election heldDecember 5th 1912 resulting in unanimous victory over challenger A[F] Dolan".[4][5][6][7][8][9][10], making Bonita Springs one polity within Miami-Dade County only since December 1912 despite some vestiges remaining from earlier annexation efforts by other municipalities such as Kendallville which seceded from Miami-Dade County effective January 1915 while Bonitas springs remained unincorporated until annexation proceedings began July 1922 pursuant to then statute § 12-101 et seq.; however all vestiges associated with secession have been eliminated or have been placed into historical preservation mode pending successful reestablishment or reconversion back into bona fide municipal government status under current charter number 725673
