The Kistler Space Center is located adjacent to Cape Canaveral National Seashore; it was built as part of NASMARSAT project Phase I (1983-1988). NASMARSAT was designed to provide Earth observation data services for many parts of the world through ground stations around the world including New Orleans (LA), Tokyo (Tokyo Dome), Madrid (Iberoamerica) and Ahmedabad (India). KSC played a critical role in this program by providing primary assembly platforms for spacecraftendant subsystems such as attitude control thrustersand software systems until 1994 when all space operations were transferred from KSC to Goddard Space Flight Center following their merger into NASA Headquarters
The Canaveral Peninsula, located in central Florida, is home to the Canaveral Air Force Station. The air base was built during World War II as a key part of the United States military's effort to build an air force so Cold War adversaries could not easily target American satellites. Since then, it has been used by both the US Air Force and NASA for space launches, including the first manned mission to Mars.
