In 1894 developers Charles Ewing and James Purdy founded what would become Pinellas County with land they had purchased from the Indians at Swain's Pointe nearby. In 1907 Townsite Company No 1 was organized to sell lots in town for $4 per acre (1/2 mile²). By 1910 more than 60% of all citrus production in Florida took place here; More than half the fruit shipped to major markets was exported to New York City alone. In 1915 incorporation followed by annexation resulted in an increase in population to 42,000; rapid growth halted when World War I began and passenger rail service ended soon after; however, fishing continued to be an important industry until well into the 21st century although commercial fishing since then has been limited mainly to sport hunting In 1990 US$1 billion worth of investments were approved for development inside or near downtown Pinellas County limits including heavy industrial waterfront redevelopment backed by Tampa mayor Carlos Gimenez which included new jobs for citizens along with new retail development across several blocks northward into Uptown McKinneytown etc.; known today as “Pinellas Promenade” due south from downtown where large office complexes have replaced most traditional family businesses dating back over 100 years ago but much still remains intact including numerous smaller shops clustered around main intersection just east of Bank Street—the heartland shopping district once home to many small grocery stores before becoming a center for higher end retailers such as Macy's etc.—much has changed since then but some things never change like people spending their time outdoors enjoying natural resources like seafood or swimming while taking advantage of attractions located just minutes away such as museums or theme parks

Clearwater, Florida is a small town in Alachua County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville-Kendall- Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Clearwater comes from a spring that flowed through the area and gave its name to the creek that runs through it. The first settlers in Clearwater were white men who arrived in 1835. By 1840, there were three stores and about thirty people living in Clearwater. In 1845, John Wesley Powell surveyed what would become Alachua County and named it for George Washington Bainbridge (1784–1857), one of his assistants on the Ulysses S. Grant Expedition to explore America's West in 1855-56. Bainbridge had been born near present day Jacksonville and died east of Gainesville at age 83 years old on December 3, 1857 while surveyor for Marion county under US Surveyor General James Kenedy Jr.. In 1847 Clearwater was reorganized as a townsite with a post office established there by Captain Edward Ladd of the 4th U.S. Infantry Regiment who took over leadership of local affairs from Major Samuel Purdy (1792–1858). Purdy had been captain of Company F1st Upson's Rangers during Seminole Wars and later served as sheriff of Orange County from 1850 to 1853; he also founded Fort Walton Beach on Pensacola bay which served as an anchorage for American warships during the Spanish–American War In 1860s two more stores were opened: Jno A Hodge & Son Store #1 on Creek Road and Will Rogers store #2 on First Street just north of present day Dunnellon Boulevard; both stores operated until 1925 when they were replaced by Ecker's Drugstore which still operates today . On January 15, 1865 President Abraham Lincoln signed Executive Order 9763 giving federal protection to all Gulf Coast slave states against any further state efforts to free their slaves - this order led to increased demand for goods delivered by sea due to military hostilities abroad . On April 11 1865 Union Navy USS "Alabama" destroyed Confederate steamer " CSS Sumter" off Pensacola beach after she refused to be taken into prize money following her return trip up Tampa Bay On November 10 1865 Union soldiers burned down several homes in downtown Clearwater after learning that some locals had sympathized with Confederate forces . One resident said "We knew that if we did not do something we would have been burned alive" It wasn't until 1886 when land around Clearwater became available for settlement following passage of Alachua County Land Ordinance No 2 which provided $5 per acre compensation foradjoining tracts ; this offer was withdrawn after objections from adjoining counties . In 1888 citrus fruit trees began being planted along Alligator Alley between State Road 566 heading east out into Lake Monroe and US 41/SR 565 continuing northeasterly towards Tallahassee; these trees continue production today . As early as 1889 Rodgers store offered ice cream cones made out of sour cream, tree sap or whipped cream popular throughout south central Florida during hot summer days

Clearwater's history dates back to 1892 when it was founded as a citrus grower town by J.B. White and his brothers on what is now known as Clearwater Boulevard and State Road 98A. In 1907, Clearwater became a city and its name changed to Clearwater Springs after the growth of nearby Spring Hill Naval Air Station made it an important military installation during World War I. After the end of World War II, Clearwater became one of the fastest-growing cities in Florida with an expansion rate of 100%. The city annexed portions of Pinellas County in 1959 and 1960; these annexation ceremonies were televised statewide for all to see. In 1990, Clearwater banned smoking indoors within its boundaries because it saw that this method was contributing to indoor air pollution which was harming local residents' health and causing respiratory problems for children living near schools. Today,smoking is still not allowed inside any public buildings within the City limits
