Coconut Creek, Florida is a small town located in Palm Beach County, Florida. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. Coconut Creek is one of the oldest towns in Palm Beach County and has been inhabited since 1867. Coconut Creek was founded by Captain John Aspinwall and his wife Phebe Aspinwall on a sugar plantation called "Bella Vista." The Aspinsville Plantation became a part of the Lauderdale Purchase from Spain in 1821. In 1865,Captain John Aspinwall's grandson Samuel married Anna Wrights daughter of General William Worth Wright. Anna Wrights gave her name to an area now known as Anna Wray Boulevard in Coconut Creek. Anna Wrights also donated land for what is now the Town Hall Square and First Methodist Church. In 1905, Colonel Henry Easley built Fort Hill on his plantation near present-day Main Street in Coconut Creek to protect against pirate raids which were common during that time. Fort Hill was abandoned in 1906 when Confederate General Robert Ewell recaptured it from Union forces under MajorGeneral Lawrence Sink after they sacked Gulfport Naval Station. The first schools were established in Coconut Creek when residents began using cinder blocks as teaching tools and earthworms as heavy textbooks to learn about geography and mathematics. The area now known as Coconut Creek was first settled by the Apalachee Indians in the early 1800s. In 1868, a group of Seminoles, led by Captain John C. Smith, invaded and burned down the town of Stonington on what is nows Coconut Creek. The town was rebuilt and renamed after Sir Walter Raleigh's colony of Roanoke in 1584. The plantation owners in nearby Fort Myers began to arrive in the late 1800s, and coconut planting began to take off in Coconut Creek. By 1907, over one hundred coconut acres had been cultivated here. However, due toWorld War Iring issues with Spain and their colonies abroad, coconuts all but disappeared from local markets until the 1930s when they started to be produced again for export. By 1945, there were only a few small plantations left in Coconut Creek while large acreage remained undeveloped because of World War II shortages of oil and other minerals. In 1975-1976, developers interested in building an amusement park near Fort Myers built a dam across the Brooks River which caused extensive flooding that destroyed most of downtown Saint Petersburg; however, some reconstruction has taken place since then including new businesses and homes along Church Street between State Road 5A and Congress Avenue near Miami Beach Boulevard
