Coral Springs is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 33,898 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Palm Beach County after West Palm Beach. The area that now forms Coral Springs was first settled by Africans in the early 1800s as part of what is now Miami-Dade County. In 1884, Spanish settlers arrived and founded Belle Air Plantation on present day's Northeast Side of Coral Springs. The name "Belle Air" comes from a white woman who named her home after a small private island off Haiti located near Belle Isle on the Miami River. In 1912, an annex to Dania Beach became part of Coral Springs when Dania Park was annexed by Palm Beach County. The name for this annexation was changed to "Coral Spring" in honor of then-Governor David Boren's donation of land to the county for public use. As more people moved into the area and annexed new lands it became difficult to keep track of which names applied to each parcel so in 1955, county commissioners decided to change all annexation titles effective January 1st, 1956 to reflect their location within county boundaries - Coral Spring being one of them In 1958 voters passed a referendum asking for annexation into Broward County and on November 3rd 1959 Coconut Creek became an incorporated town with its own government including schools and fire department In 1961 Japanese Americans were relocated from Fort Lauderdale (then called Ocean City) during World War II as part of Operation Little America and they settled in what is now Coral Springs The first high school opened in Coral Springs in 1951 as Booker T Washington High School On October 15th 1991 Hurricane Andrew made landfall just north of downtown Coconut Creek leaving damage and death throughout much of South Florida On September 14th 2002 Hurricane Wilma made landfall near Jupiteropy making catastrophic flooding across much southeastern Florida that destroyed many homes, businesses, churches and other structures On December 17th2002 Hurricane Charley struck southern Pinellas Counties causing major damage
