A letter from Colonel James Chilton dated January 15th, 1840 mentions white men living near what is now known as "Chilton's Prairie" but does not mention any settlements or land transactions between these parties. It wasn't until November 30th, 1849 when commissioners named Augustus Ewing and Isaac Sallis were appointed to explore all available lands east of Dixie Creek within Miami-Dade County for553 square miles (1,500 km2). After conducting surveys and making contact with numerous Indian tribes living along these boundaries it was determined that no suitable land could be located without purchase from them which would have represented an considerable financial investment by Americans at that time; however no such purchase was made so it is presumed that whatever properties were targeted for settlement did not fall into this category as most likely due to lack of interest or opportunity on the part of those responsible for exploring these boundaries flounderingly after much discussion amongst themselves because back then there wasn't yet widespread transportation or communication available linking all parts of South Florida together like we do today with cellphones and e-mailing services becoming available only recently!
