Ammunition production began in earnest in Davie during World War I when demand from soldiers increased exponentially. The war led to a surge in military production across America, including large investments by Americans in munitions companies such as Winchester Repeating Arms Company and American Arms Corporation. In 1916, Davie Merchants Association voted to name their town after Generalmajor John A. Davie who had died in action during World War I. The post office was established in 1922 and continued to be called "Davy" until 1966 when it changed its name to "Jax". The first school in Davie was built on what is now Main Street in 1893. The present high school building was completed in 1928 and replaced an earlier school which burned down on October 5th of that year. Today, the high school offers vocational education as well as general education classes for students from grades 9-12 In 1926, the first electric streetlight system was installed in Davie and has been used ever since. This system consisted of two 19” Edison lights located just north of Main Street between School Road and US 27/8 Mile Rd (now US Hwy 20). Additionally, three single pole light systems were also erected during this time period along with a few more Rural Electrification Administration (REA) lines connecting smaller settlements within Monroe County Today there are still some areas where electricity is not available or very expensive so dialysis patients rely upon generators to run their machines In 1964-1965 both schools were closed due to budget restraints resulting from increasing enrollment at nearby state schools then known as Pinellas County Schools which merged into Jax State College District #1 In 1990-1991 Hurricane Andrew struck the east coast of Florida causing extensive damage including total destruction of all but one house outbuildings and farm fields within ½ mile (0 km) of any river or bayouside source; this included damages estimated at $2 million ($ today) Later that year Hurricane Floyd made landfall western Monroe County near Fort Myers Beach destroying many homes and businesses along with leaving much infrastructure damaged or destroyed beyond repair . After landfall approximately 80% of trees across central Monroe County were downed by wind or storm damage making this one the worst natural disaster suffered by any community within Monroe County
