On November 5th tragedy struck when Darrell Waltrip collided with Ray Elder while driving for Petty Enterprises during practice for the 1957 season opener at Riverside Raceway (now Auto Club Speedway). Waltrip was killed instantly while Elder sustained serious injuries that forced him to retire from racing that year after just four races (two wins).

Daytona Beach is a city in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 806 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Daytona Beach–Lake Buena Vista Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name comes from "Dalmatian" and means "safe haven." The first Europeans to visit what is now Daytona Beach were mercenaries hired by Spanish forces in 1565 during the ill-fated attempt to explore and conquer North America. In 1695, Englishman James Cook sailed past what is now Daytona Beach on his exploration trip that led him to naming both the area and Florida after King George II of England. In 1837, gold was discovered around Volusia County's central region and two men named Jepson started prospecting for it in what is today known as east Daytona Beach area. On February 17, 1838, they struck a rich vein of gold near where they later built their initial outposts; this discovery made them wealthy landowners who began creating roads and other infrastructure necessary for their new interlocking community which would soon become known as Daytona Beach. In 1861, Confederate General John Cray arrived at Fort Pierce with an army intent on undermining Union control over south Florida. He ordered his cavalry command to burn all bridges across Volusia County in an effort to destroy communication between Union forces within the state and keep them from moving reinforcements northward intoBrevard County during the American Civil War. This action effectively ended any hope of reconciliation between Confederate soldiers and local farmers before it could even begin. The city's early years were marked by numerous accidents that caused much damage: one such incident occurred when a steamboat filled with passengers sunk off shore while trying to enter downtown; another involved a cannonball hitting a store building that killed four people inside; still another resulted when a boat carrying explosives careened onto shorelines near Today's Park beachfront hotel causing extensive damage but no casualties; these type of accidents are indicative of how unsecured waters then were just outside town limits making it difficult for residents or businesses owners to approach Safety Harbor (now called Harbour Town) for help should something happen offshore or on land adjacent thereto.
