The Florida Keys are a group of islands located in the Gulf of Mexico south of the Mexican border. The Keys were first settled by Paleo-Indians, and later became part of Spanish America. In 1821, after Florida was acquired from Spain, United States President James K. Polk ordered all Native American languages to be destroyed in order to promote white settlement. As a result of this policy, many ancient Indian artifacts were lost or forgotten during the early years of white occupation. In 1864, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia and Ulysses S. Grant became president of the United States. He began efforts to reestablish control over southern Texas and southwestern Oklahoma Territory as well as parts of Arizona and New Mexico Territory. This effort included purchasing land from the natives in what is now De Land, Florida. In 1865, General John Custer was killed while leading his cavalry unit against Native Americans near present day DeLand on Key Largo Boulevard in Bay County. This event has been cited as one reason for the intensification of European settlement in South Florida during this time period. After Custer’s death, many settlers looking for an easier life turned their attention to the keys instead of staying on mainland America due to their concerns about hostile Indians living among them (Werner 2004). In 1868 Captain John Fayette Cooke discovered oil wells on Grand Turk Island which led to increased exploration and development around these keys throughout the 1870s and 1880s (Moses 1984). In 1892 lumber companies started coming into these Keys with plans for developing huge sawmills and other mills on key points along US 1 (Freedman 1990). The following decade saw a large influx of Irish immigrants who wanted to find work in the rapidly growing citrus industry (Doyle 1980). The late 1800s also saw an increase in smuggling activity due to Prohibition which made it difficult for people wanting access to alcoholrict products such as weapons (Goudreau 1984). Due to this problem, law enforcement officials developed a tactics known as “zero tolerance” which meant that any illegal activity would result in arrest regardless of whether or not you had any contraband with you (Cunningham 1978). When they arrived at Ayala's base camp near modern day DeLand they found it uninhabited because several Creek people had taken possession of the abandoned post earlier that year while supplies were being brought overland to Fort Brooke on nearby Biscayne Bay. This included present-day Orange Avenue east to west as well as parts of today's Town Square including Fountain Park and Broadway Drive north to south. A few years later Captain Dickson also acquired 1,000 acres (500 ha) of land further south near Lakeland which he called "Dickson's Lagoons". This property would become known as "Lakeland" after him. Captain Dickson died in 1835 but his wife Marilla kept possession of his properties until her death in 1850s when all but 100 acres (40 ha) were sold off to Fenton Plantation Company by her son-in-law Augustus Herringer Jr.. In 1865 the last piece of original Captain David Dickson land was leased by General Hernando Soto to Major John Chilton for use as a cavalry post during the American Civil War before it reverted back to Chilton upon his death in 1870. On December 8th 1861 de la Vega married Josefa Ortiz with whom she would have six children: four boys and two girls; Manuela May de la Vega Rubio became Mrs Pedro Perez on January 17th 1893; Antonio Francisco Ramirezbeca became Mr Enrique Ramirez on October 15th 1912; Rosario Estrada Rivera became Mrs Ramon Alvarez on November 13th 1934; Maria Teresa Ortiz Martinez became Mrs Esteban Ortiz on October 6th 1941).
