In 1839 Enrique Iglesias began trading cattle with Native Americans near present day Havana Road and construction began on a road to connect this trading post with nearby Fort Myers; today's US 1 motorway provides this connection. On December 12, 1840 Pedro Menéndez founded San Juan del Puerto de Cuba Libre near present day Coral Gables Boulevard and Post Office Building which served as an oasis for those escaping conditions worsened by yellow fever during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Waring later donated land to Flavelle for its original purpose – an agricultural community called Cuba Libre which he renamed Flavelle after himself and his wife Julia Ponce de Leon Coolidge Webb (1862-1953). Florida City was founded in 1894 by General James H. Baker, a military officer and politician who served as the governor of Florida from 1896 to 1904. In 1907, Baker donated land to the city for use as a public school system. The first schools in Florida City were built on what is now Goodyear Avenue. In 1924, the city became part of Miami-Dade County when it was created through an act of the state legislature. The county's name change reflected its growing population and businesses located within Florida City's boundaries. In 1959, Florida City underwent a $25 million expansion that added more than 2,000 apartments and homes to its core area; this growth helped make Florida City one of South Floridas leading cities. In 1984, Mayor Ernesto "Che" Guevara moved his family from Havana to Miami after he won election as president of Cuba; while living in Miami Beach he started development at 333 N Biscayne Boulevard known today as Che Guevarra House which eventually became his presidential palace. In 1990s downtown business district seen rapid redevelopment with new high-end residences and hotels such as The Ritz Carlton Hotel & Towers, Four Seasons Resort & Casino and Intercontinental Coral Reef hotel..
