Fort Lauderdale is a city in the state of Florida, United States. It is located on the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale Expressway, less than 24 miles (31 km) south of downtown Miami. The city was founded by Spanish colonists in 1835 as part of the American colonies. Fort Lauderdale became an important port on the mouth of the Everglades and was known for its Mardi Gras revelers and exclusive nightlife during Prohibition. The city has since undergone several waves of growth, becoming one of Floridas richest metropolises with a population over 1 million as of2015. The City of Fort Lauderdale was first organized on February 15, 1835 when 10 settlers from Havana arrived at what is now Ft. Lauderdale's Old Sunoco Station on Deerfield Beach Boulevard[1]. They named their new settlement after Santiago de Cuba – then under Spanish rule – because they could not find a more suitable location within the colony for their new town.[2] A post office called "Cuba" was established in 1836,[3] but it did not take off until 1840 when mail started being sent through Fort Worth to Cuba once again due to blockade by Spain. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in Fort Lauderdale and it had grown sufficiently that it voted to incorporate as a city on March 4th following annexation by Broward County from Palm Beach County.[4] The first mayor was John Hickey who served from 1840-1845; he is also credited with designing much of present day FtLauderdale's infrastructure including streets, water systems and parks.[5] On November 3rd 1860 commissioners took possession of property north and east of current Daycare Avenue between First Street North and US gas station across I-95 which would become today's Boca Raton Blvd.. In 1865 fort Lauderdale voters passed a resolution allowing for land west side Estero River where Glades Road now borders Federal Highway to be used as open space or parkland while still keeping use for military purpose only if no other developer came forward to purchase it; this allowed Rancho Park/Suncoast State Park to become reality just east of Boca Raton Blvd., making Fort Lauderdale one stoplight away from alligators! The area around today's Post Office building became known as "The Gables".[6][7][8][9][10] In 1870 redefined boundaries resulting in incorporation into Broward County with Fort Lauderdale annexing easternmost Palm Beach County proper along Sunrise Boulevard just south near Intersection Of US 95 & I-95s….. At this time FtLauderdale numbered 609esteaders………. With prohibition laws taking effect starting December 15th 1920 FtLauderdale went into 'hard times' with few jobs available let alone people willing or able to buy alcohol so speakeasy’s like Lucky Strike opened up giving bartenders another form job options…………….. With repeal effective January 1933 many speakeasy owners lost their licenses however many kept going out business model……………………………………… Many sufficed creating various bars thruout South Florida continued until late 1970s
