In 1915, Fort Myers was the first major U.S. military base to be built in the area now known as Florida Keys. The fort was designed to protect the keys from Spanish forces and their American allies during World War I. It also served as a training ground for future American soldiers and Marines. The fort's days as a military stronghold are long gone, but it still holds a special place in Fort Myers' cultural memory. Fort Myers is located on the mainland of the Gulf of Mexico and is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The first Europeans to sight what is now Fort Myers were sailing downriver from Havana on July 4, 1513 when they saw a small island inlet with two trees growing on it that they called Isla de Cuba (Island of Cuba). A year later they discovered an uninhabited island inlet between present-day Fort Myers and Naples which they named Isabela after Queen Elizabeth I of England who then ruled Spain. On November 2, 1540 Pedro Menéndez de Avilés landed here with his Portuguese exploring party seeking new routes through Tampa Bay. He named it Puerto Rico after King Ferdinand II of Aragon who had granted him land along Tampa Bay as part of his dowry for marrying Doña Ana Fernández de Oviedo y Gómez on December 6, 1492. Afterward this region came under Spanish control until 1821 when it passed into American hands following their War for Independence. The Panic of 1893 caused a decline in commerce throughout Southwest Florida but especially in Fort Myers where exports totaled $1 million during its peak year; however local manufacturing revived with building materials such as bricks and tiles becoming popular products exported back home while citrus crops boomed from export trade alone bringing more than $5 million worth product to market annually by 1902 The railroads arrived during this time helping spur growth including construction of downtown streets as well as electrical substations that became ubiquitous today First Avenue becomes known locally as "the avenue Of Commerce" The city's first school was built in 1879 on Seawall Boulevard near present day Veterans Memorial Park while other early schools include Our Lady Of Peace Roman Catholic School (1893), Immaculate Conception Protestant School (1905), St John's Episcopal Cathedral (1911) and Holy Cross Catholic Church (1920).
