Homestead, Florida is a small town in Lee County, Florida. The population was 1,031 at the 2000 census. It is located on State Road 928 east of Gainesville and south of Gulf Breeze. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.8 square mile (2 km²), all of it land. The first settlers in Homestead were farmers who arrived in 1836 from Maryland and Delaware. They were followed by other farmers and traders who moved into the area during the 1840s and 1850s. In 1857, a post office was established at Homestead with Wm Happer as its first clerk. By 1870, there were six businesses in Homestead—four stores and two groceries—and over 100 residents. The townsite was extended westward to include what is now Pinellas County in 1881; however, no permanent homes were built there until after World War II when developers began building subdivisions on land that had been purchased for homesteading purposes by veterans of World War I and II. In 1949, the local school system merged with those of nearby Gulf Breeze and Ocala to form Lee County Schools; however, most activities associated with Homestead — such as voting, government services, firefighting etc.— continued to be carried out by its own school board until 1971 when they became part of Lee County Public Schools via an act of the county Legislature. As part of efforts to attract new development to an increasingly rural community many shops closed down or relocated within five years following deregulation which led to increased competition among retailers throughout much OFHOFLA- especially along Interstate 95 where job opportunities abounded but rents remained high due primarily to proximity to larger cities like Tampa Bay Area/St Petersburg/Clearwater etc., also prices for agricultural goods soared because access cheapened since production shifted from heretofore highly subsidized state programs like Conservation Reserve Program farmland being used for more conventional crops such as soybeans instead)

In 1821, Governor Andrew Jackson signed an act authorizing the construction of a canal through Northeast Florida - which would later become known as the Gulf Coast Railroad. This new development helped spur economic growth in northeastern Florida and marked the beginning of a period of stability for the community. Over time, Homestead became known for its production of citrus fruits - which was one of its primary industries until World War II when phosphate production became dominant. In 1951, after years of preparation, homestead residents voted to establish themselves as their own municipality within northeast Florida under the name "Florida Citrus Commission." They continue to play an important role in local government today!
