In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate Major General Prentice Alston established Camp Pickens on what would later be known as Meridian Street near downtown Lake City to supply Confederate troops with food and water while they fought in Alabama and Tennessee outside of Nashville. The city limits were expanded when Kissimmee became a separate municipality in 1907 after annexation by Lake City proper. During World War II, much of Fort Myers was destroyed by bombing raids from Japan; however, parts of town such as Fort Myers Beach still remain standing today thanks to extensive rebuilding which began following World War II and continues to this day. After the war ended in 1945, many displaced persons from Hiroshima/ Nagasaki settled in southern Polk County including those living at Fort Myers Beachfront Naval Air Station (FNBAS). Many families also moved into new homes built along State Road 914 (now US-1) which connected FNBAS with downtown Lake City through an elaborate system of streetscape improvements spearheaded by Mayor Jody McFarlane beginning in 1951 which saw completion of both avenues within five years – making it one of America's most rapidly developed urban areas during that time period .
