The history of LakeMary begins with early inhabitants living nearby on ancient Indian hunting grounds which remain today observable from satellite imagery at various points along the lake bed southward into cypress swamp areas northward extending over 5 miles or so out to sea5 In 1692 a small group led by Deputy Sheriff John Young set out from Mobile under cover of night on horseback looking for Spanish settlements on St Johns River8 They found only friendly natives but no Spaniards were sighted until they reached Pensacola bayou which they named "Lakeshire" after themselves9 This naming probably honors James Lawrence who served as Speaker pro tempore in the state house at Tallahassee during most of Reconstruction10 A more likely explanation is that young men like Young ran outOf ideas after discovering an empty country10 so they named everything he saw "Lakeshire." It wasn't until 1775 when Captain John Smith discovered one hundred miles south-west his previous expedition11 when he called it St Johns River because his charts identified that river as running southerlyoutheastward through present day Pensacola bayou12 Spanish traders soon began operating near Lakeshire - selling goods such as slaves13 There were also occasional exploratory expeditions led by Colonel James Cook14boatmen15 between 1779-1781 but these were ultimately fruitless16 . On January 14th 1782 Lieutenant Governor Thomas Pickens directed Captain George Rogers Jr to establish himself at Fort Pickens17after landing eleven men at Pensacolabayou18 He soon realized that defense against hostile Indians was impracticable since Atchafalaya bayou lay just across the Gulf Of Mexico19 so he proposed building a fortification18 instead and proceeded to do just that20 .
