Largo is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida. It was founded as a cattle with lumber and cotton farms on the banks of the Largo River. The city changed its name to Largo in 1907, after Major General James W. Largo, commanding general of United States forces in World War I. The city's first school was built on what is now Ponce de Leon Boulevard in 1909. In 1925, Largo became an incorporated municipality with a population of around 100 people. In 1945, during the Second World War, Largo became an important staging area for the Allied invasion of Europe because it was located just south of Miami Beach and close to both Key Biscayne and Hollywood Hills. The city's armory and munitions storage were used by American troops during the war. After the war, many businesses closed down due to lack of customers or competition from larger cities such as Miami or Orlando. However, some businesses reopened such as KFC which remains open today thanks to its location on Ponce de Leon Boulevard near downtown Largo
