In 1928, it annexed New Hope which made it one of Hillsborough County's five cities. In 1957, Lauderdale Lakes incorporated as a state city with its own government and school board system under its jurisdiction; however, because Hillsborough County is still divided into townships (except for Plant City), annexation has not always been possible without creating new towns within existing communities or without breaking existing community boundaries
Lauderdale Lakes first became a settlement in 1837 when Captain Hugh Lawson, of the brig "Liverpool", landed on the shores of what is now Lauderdale Lakes. Lawson's landing was part of an attempt to establish a commercial community on the then uninhabited banks of Lake Okeechobee. The town was named for Sir John A. Lauder, 1st Baronet, who had donated land to the town in 1836. Lauderdale Lakes grew quickly and by 1850 it had a population of 175 people. In 1865, the town was named for James B. Lauderdale, Sr., who had served as a U.S. Senator from Florida from 1889 until his death in 1893. In 1892, one year after James B. Lauderdale's death, the town was renamed for his widow Flora Bogan Lauderdale. The city hall and all other public buildings were built between 1912 and 1916 by architect Paul Wirths under contract with Mayor Jepson Ladd-Bradford (1863-1938). In 1932, Miami Beach became an official city within Broward County and Jacksonville annexed Lauderdale Lakes in 1934; however, annexation did not happen until 1959 due to legal challenges brought about by property owners challenging their right to be included in Miami Beach without first receiving special consideration from Broward County officials pursuant to county law which allowed annexation only if there existed "a clear majority" among county voters supporting it
