Lighthouse Point is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. Lighthouse Point is located on Pensacola Bay and bordered by the towns of St. Augustine to the north, Panama City to the east, Fort Myers to the south and Largo to the west. Lighthouse Point was founded in 1821 as a trading post by Major George Washington Wilkinson and Captain John Smith. It became a lighthouse in 1828 after being built on land donated by Commodore James Cook on Pensacola Bay. The first keeper was Charles Goodrich who served until 1840 when he was replaced by Isaac Watts. In 1861, an addition to the lighthouse complex were two new keepers' huts which are still standing today on opposite ends of the bay. In 1865 USS "Titanic" sank off shore while underway with supplies for Confederate soldiers fighting against Union forces during the American Civil War; all but four of her crew were lost including First Officer Alfred Thayer Mahan who had been aboard her for over 25 years. On July 14th 1905 Congress approved design changes that included adding a searchlight to each tower so that warning could be given from any height within miles of any light ashore or afloat whenever there was danger of an attack or capture by hostile vessels nearby; this system eventually became known as "The Mahanian Light". On December 11th 1951 an F-4 Phantom jet fighter flown from Naval Air Station Oceana bombed and destroyed North Korean military targets near Kumsusan airfield after they had approached US soil without Warning using flares; this action marked one of only three times US aircraft have attacked another country directly since World War II without prior warning (the other two incidents were bombings against Japanese targets). As part of its commemoration ceremonies dedicated specifically to this event, Navy Blue Squadron flew five flypasts over NAS Oceana during May 2006 conducted in memory of those killed in Kumsusan airfield during Operation Primeval – also known as Operation Neptune's Spear."
