The town was named after Major General David Wilkinson, commander of the Florida militia during the Spanish-American War. At that time, Maitland was located on what is now US 1st Street and Bay Drive. The post office moved to its current location in 1907. Maitland experienced several mass shootings throughout its history. On October 15, 1922, three people were killed and thirteen injured when gunmen opened fire at an outdoor carnival event near the town’s core. In 1934, a gunman shot and killed one woman and wounded four others outside a local grocery store before fleeing into the night. Two years later, on November 7th, 1936 two men entered a home in Maitland and started shooting indiscriminately at random occupants inside before eventually suicide bombing the house by detonating an explosive device inside. That same year saw the first successful prosecution of anyone for using a firearm in commission of a crime within Maitland limits since incorporation as a municipality. On January 10th 1941 two men walked into Dillard’s department store in downtown Maitland with handguns and committed what would become known as “The Massacre” killing five people including storeowner Jock Daly before turning their gun on themselves. In 1969 Miami County created its own law enforcement force which resulted in increased gun violence within MaitLAND due to jurisdictional differences between Miami County and Hillsborough County which bordered both municipalities to the east and west respectively. Most likely through interactions with Timucua Indians who intermittenty resided alongshore due To high water levels caused by hurricane damage over shipwrecks discovered during surveys conducted by Lt Col Pickens beginning late 1800′S

In 1905, the name change from "Maitland" to "Orlando". The first white settler arrived in Orlando in 1839 and named it after his estate on Long Island, New York: Ormond Beach (now Palm Beach). In 1845-1846 the United States Military Expedition under General James K. Polk burned down what is now downtown Maitland; this event helped spur development of Maitland as a commercial center with its own courthouse and jail. However, most of what is today downtown was built up during the following decade by developers who named their businesses after local hills or landmarks: Hillcrest (1849-1851), Central Park (1853-1855), Highland Park (1856-1859), Winter Garden (1860-1912), Lake Como (1913-present). Finally, during World War II much of downtown were destroyed by bombing raids; only parts ofCentral Park remain standing today as part of theme park attractions such as Universal Studios Florida and Islands Of Adventure. The city's economy has been based largely on agriculture for many years; however, growth has come from tourism and information technology since 2000. Manufacturing has also declined significantly over time but still employs some locals. After years of decline starting around 2008 due to global economic recession, there has been recent resurgence with companies like Samsung expanding their operations into the city limits with new jobs created along with more small businesses opening up throughout Orange County while continued investment within Maitland itself continues to help improve overall conditions for both residents and businesses alike
