The Miami-Dade County Sheriff's Department has a long and proud history of providing law enforcement services to the community of Maitland, Florida. From its inception in 1907 until today, the department has served the citizens of this small town with distinction. Maitland is located on the border of Miami-Dade County and Broward County, two counties that are home to large sections of Fort Lauderdale beachfront. The sheriff's department was created in 1907 as part of an effort to provide law and order in this area. At that time, it was the first county police department in Miami-Dade County. The present day sheriff's department is made up of around 100 officers who serve both Maitland and nearby neighborhoods. They work together to keep our community safe from crime, handle requests for assistance from other agencies such as fire/EMS, investigate complaints and crimes reported by residents, respond to emergencies including car accidents and natural disasters, serve as a liaison between local businesses and government entities including school boards and city councils.
Maitland, Florida is a small town in Brevard County, Florida. The population was 1,834 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee-Sanford Combined Statistical Area. Maitland is located on State Road A1A about 12 miles (19 kilometers) east of Orlando and 5 miles (8 kilometers) west of Sanford. The area that now makes up Maitland was long inhabited by Alachua County Native Americans. In 1824, Englishman John Wesley Powell passed through this area on his way to map out Central Florida when he named the hole in the ground "Maitland" for Governor James Ketchum's daughter, Maida Elizabeth Waylesboro. In 1827, surveyor George Stephenson discovered gold near what would later be known as Maitland Creek and platted the town site on land that had been owned by David Hilliard since 1795. The name "Maitland" first appeared formalized on a plat dated November 3, 1830, when Judge Isaac Hassell approved boundaries for a new county created from parts of Alachua and Orange counties. In 1839, following Hillsborough County's creation from Osceola and Lake counties, Maitland became one of three towns in Brevard County chosen to participate in what would become called the Seminole Wars; during this time it was also home to Captain John Fenton's Indian Removal Regiment which moved Indians off their lands into Indian Territory south of Tampa Bay before being pushed back by United States forces under General Andrew Jackson into Seminole country near Tallahassee. In 1865 after Seminole War hostilities ended and newly appointed Confederate Brigadier general Robert Ewell laid claim to all Seminoles living east of Polk Street in downtown Jacksonville but including most or all of Maitlnd,[2][3] several hundred civilians were evacuated via horseback over Christmas week 1870–71 to live among white settlers at New Smyrna Beach south of Jacksonville;[4][5][6] these evacuees are sometimes referred to as "New Moon".[7][8] At least some residents who left during this time period may have returned home during Reconstruction years but their descendants continue to identify themselves as "Maidanians".[9][10] The post office opened at its current location on May 8th 1883.[11][12] The first store was built by Wm Broughton and his son Willis Broughton Sr., with help from local farmer James Haines.[13] By 1890 Main Street had grown too wide for two streets running parallel so they widened it single file becoming First Avenue today while Third Avenue continues as an easement used by nearby Forest Service offices until recent days when it has reverted back to public road status. On December 10th 1915 Jno Pritchard organized what would become known as the Chamberlains Irishtown branchline Railway Company Limited with himself as President/CEO and Tom Doherty – Vice President/CFO[14]. That same year mail service began between Melbourne (then Muskegon), Michigan [15], Chicago [16], West Palm Beach [17], St Petersburg [18], Daytona Beach [19], Gainesville [20],[21],[22],[23],[24]), Sanford (then Putnam County), Marietta (then Cobb County), Plantation Key West,[25],[26]'s Fort Myers'"Key Largo"[27]'s Naples'Fort Myers'"Naples'"St Petersburg'" Daytona Beach'"Gainesville"'s Plantation Key West""Marietta"'s CobbCounty'', consisting only of business letters placed in envelopes inside brown paper bags with red ribbons around top instead then flat cardboard boxes today - others products such as groceries received outside like oranges or potatoes though still boxed up today
Gun slings are a type of sling that are used to transport firearms. They were originally designed to increase the firepower of artillery by pulling the weapon closer to the shooter. The first gun slings were made from animal skin and cords. There was also a wooden version called a “frog” sling, which was similar in design to a modern day rifle sling. Maitland was founded in 1836 by John Maitland and his wife, Chloe. The town was named after the estate of Lord Melbourne, which belonged to Maitland's father. In 1840, Maitland donated land for a courthouse and jail. The first settlers were Methodists from England. By the 1860s, the town had a population of about 100 people. Named after General James A. Garfield, who served as Ulysses S. Grant's Vice President during the American Civil War, Maitland became an important military base during that time period. It also became known as a center of citrus production because of its location on the Florida coasts where oranges grew abundantly. In 1892, Maitland incorporated as a city and began to develop its economy around agriculture and tourism. In 1916, it merged with neighbouring Live Oak to form Greater Orlando; however, it reverted back to its original name in 1929 when it was annexed into Orlando by county commissioners under order of Governor Lawton Chiles Jr.. After World War II ended in 1945, many businesses closed down due to the post-war boom; however, some slowly reopened over time including Jamba Juice Company which moved into downtown in 1990 and still operates today (renowned for their smoothies). Maitland is located at 31°48′40″N 90°48′20″W (31 degrees 48’40″N 90 degrees 48’20″W), just west of Kissimmee on State Road 441 between Live Oak Boulevard and Universal Boulevard/SR 441A/ County Road 436B towards Sanford Village Center/SR 436B just east of SR 436B between US 1 exit 328E /SR 524E northbound near intersection with SR 441A southbound near interchange with US 192 eastbound exit 329E just south of intersection with I-75
