Maitland is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,674 at the 2010 census. The name Maitland comes from "mighty" and "cape." In 1835, Captain John Smith sighted land to the east of what is now Maitland on a cape that he called Cape Lookout. He named this point "Maitland" after his mentor and friend, Admiral James Cook. Captain David Stuart visited Maitland in 1793 while exploring the Southeast coast of America; he called it Stuart's Fort on the cape. In 1845, General Andrew Jackson sailed for Tampa Bay with over 5,000 troops and supplies; he stopped at anchor off Maitland on November 14th to rest and load his ship with supplies before continuing north to Gainesborough along the Gulf Coast. On November 15th Jacksonville was founded as a military post by General Jackson and local resident James Purdy; it became known as Jacksonville because of its location just south of Stirling Island (now Lake Worth). In 1847 a sawmill was established at Maitland by J.B. Reedy & Sonsexton; it operated until 1926 when it went out of business due to competition from larger mills located near Jacksonville. The mill built an interesting water tower that still stands today - an engineering marvel even back then! The first store in Maitland opened in 1865 by Wm Henson & Co.; it closed in 1925 but reopened as the First National Bank building in 1928-29 after being replaced by current bank headquarters building which fronts Main Street through most of its history (rebuilt 1954-1960). From 1865-1892 there were also six blacksmith shops operating within town limits - all open Friday nights except for one which closed due to lack of customers during prohibition years due to race riots taking place nearby outside town limits! A few stores opened up after prohibition ended but closed soon afterwards because no one wanted produce from areas that were now considered dry: hardware store (1924), bakery (1925), ice cream parlor (1926) and post office (1927). All six blacksmith shops closed about 1930s when Prohibition ended nationwide though two re-opened briefly during World War II before closing again shortly thereafter because no customers emerged who could afford their prices/time commitment (& politically incorrect times!). One remaining blacksmith shop remains active today! From 1830 until 1907 there was only one hotel within town limits - the original Sumter Hotel which stood on mile long Main Street between Tenth Avenue North and Eighth Avenue South until 1957 when it burned down becoming part of Town Square Shopping Center complex across Tenth Avenue North from Interstate 495Pkwy which took over ownership/ management responsibility for Sumter Hotel property following destruction caused by Hurricane Belle Epoque in 1947! After 1907 there were three hotels within town limits: Park Innatonial Hotel South(later Park Plaza hotel), Sunburst Motel(later Sunburst Suites motel)and Days Inn(laterDays Inn Orlando Airport). Downtown development continued throughout prohibition however these properties slowly lost market share given advances made elsewhere by those same developers making downtown more Walkable/ bikeable etc.: Sunburst Motel/(later Sunburst Suites motel), Days Inn( laterDays Inn Orlando Airport)), IHOP-(Former IHOP Building currently used as offices forBroward County government), Courtyard Marriott Expressions Resort[Former Courtyard Marriott]&Residence Inn[Former Courtyard Renaissance] or just plain old motels goin' places like they always have: Park innatonial hotel south(), Sunburstmotel(), Days innOrlando airport())

In 1837, John and Abigail Maitland established a small farm on Mud Island in what is now Maitland Township (then Clearwater). They named their farm after Mimicking Sound which belonged to them onshore at mile marker 5 on what is now US 98W between Tampa and St Petersburg (now part of Kissimmee), Florida The couple continued farming until 1861 when they moved to Fort Myers Beach, Florida due to economic reasons. There they erected a post office and began selling newspapers which are still published today in Maitland In 1959, Maitlamont merged with neighbouring Clearwater to form one city under the name of Miami-Dade County - making it clear that both towns had come together because they shared similar interests including being close to US 98W and Ft Myers Beach

Maitland was founded in 1851 by Captain John Maitland. It became a town in 1884, and was named for James Turnbull Maitland, the first United States Postmaster General. The town had a population of around 100 people when it ceased to exist as a municipality on February 1, 1984.
