Since the early 1800s, Miami Shores has been a center for ammunition production. Ammunition manufacturers in this area have included John Brown & Company, Winchester Repeating Arms Company, and Remington Arms Company. Today, Miami Shores is home to several suppliers of ammunition products and services as well as a number of businesses that manufacture and sell ammo. In 1885, John Brown & Company established themselves in Miami Shores. The company was started by John Brown himself and his brother-in-law Sam Shields. They were selling guns and ammunition at the time. In 1916, Winchester Repeating Arms Company arrived in Miami Shores from Hartford Connecticut with their new Model 1903 semiautomatic rifle. This rifles were imported into Florida to be sold through the market here. By 1922, both Winchester Repeating Arms Company and Remington Arms had left Miami Shores for other locations in Ohio and New York City respectively. However,Brown & Co., continued operations until 1933 when they merged with Wesson Firearms Corporation (later known as Colt). At this point handguns became the primary focus of the company while rifles continue to be made PRODUCTION LINE: Rifles only The first shipment of 5 rounds each of .38 Special revolver caliber rounds was sent on December 3rd 1898 from Brownsville Texas across the United States under order No 825001 from Cleveland OH by Fenton's Rifle Works In 1899–1901 an experimental hand cannon called "Olympic" was made at Brownsville TX by US Ordnance Department under contract no HNAD 9031 In 1902–1903 an experimental breechloading shotgun called "Spruce Goose" was produced at Brownsville TX by US Ordnance Department under contract no HNAD 9064 In 1904–1905 an experimental rifle called "Mathews" was produced at Brownsville TX by US Ordnance Department under contract no HNAD 9083 John Brown & Co., which became Winchester Repeating Arms Company changed their name to Wesson Firearms Corporation on February 21st 1906 after merging with Henry Wesson Manufacturing Corporation which also companies made revolvers pistols cartridges cases etc…. On November 14th 1911 Revolver Round Nos 7692 SCMR being shipped from Baltimore MD frm Baltimore Gun Store to Virginia Beach VA having originated from Wesson Factory on March 17th 1901…..On January 25th 1912 Chambered Rifles round for 12 gauge shotgun named “Patriots” sent out from Wilmington DE via Erie Pa Express Mail w/order # 190714 From George Washington Carver To James Moxey JR Atlanta GA……… On July 15th 1912 – twelve gauge shotgun round designated “Liberty” using case manufactured by JHP Ammunition COMPANY Shipments commence From New Castle KY differntly than Expected…….. serial number found on rim around base inscription “JHP AUGUST 1912” confirms that these rounds were actually delivered on July 15th 1912…..On September 1st 1914 – ten round magazine capacity version of carbine named “Sherlock” being christened “Winchester Model 10 Carbine” being send via mail order direct to Albany NY City Limits…..By 1915 Crosman Ammunition CO had moved into town….At this time about seventy five percent of all trade within USA came through Port Of TampaBay where exports went ashore

In 1959, Miami Shores became an incorporated city status under District No. 2 of the City of Miami Board of Education; it was one of only two cities in metropolitan Dade County at that time. On November 6th 1960 Mayor Manuel Diaz announced plans for what would become known as "The Project", which would consist of building new homes for low-income families within walking distance of jobs and services in downtown Miami proper. In 1885 an oil well was drilled in what would become downtown Miami Shores and production began soon after; however due to subsidence Oil rigs were later discovered all aroundtown making it difficult for people to live there permanently so businesses moved out until it became more of a ghost town during prohibition days when alcohol was not legal
