In 1837, a group of men led by Captain Cornelius Vanderbilt bought 2,000 acres of land east of Mount Dora from the Creekside Indian Tribe for $2 million bucks (equivalent to $19 million today). This purchase created one of civilization's biggest natural resources – citrus fruit trees that would yield oranges and other crops year-round – while also providing an ideal place to build homes and establish businesses. Captain Vanderbilt turned his new home into a resort called "Dorothy" which became worldfamous due to its beauty and luxury surroundings. The hotel cost $1 million to build but it soon became one of society's most popular tourist destinations thanks to its magnificent facilities including a spa, indoor heated pool, tennis courts, as well as elegant private gardens complete with grandiose trees and driveways that led up to sumptuous residences overlooking Palm Beach Harbor。Today many people still visit Captain Vandyck's Resort every day during their stay in Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood! Captain Vanderbilt had no control over how things changed around him however; he left behind one of America's earliest towns which would later grow into one of its most beautiful communities ever!
Mount Dora was a peak in the process of being built on the Florida panhandle by settlers in the 1830s. The mountain was first named Mount Union, but was renamed Mount Dora after a local Indian chief who donated land to the town. The first settler at Mount Dora was John Chapman, who arrived in 1835. The town of Mount Dora grew up around the fort and post office on the peak. In 1856, Fort Myers was founded nearby and Mount Dora became an appendage to that city.
