On November 14, 1922, the first permanent settlers in North Port were welcomed by Mayor J.D. Payne and other leaders of the town. The town was named after Fort Myers, Florida's second capital and a key stop on the Underground Railroad during the early 1800s. The post office was established in 1923 and soon became an important center for trade with nearby Miami and Tampa. North Port saw its first census in 1930, which counted 602 residents. By 1941, it had grown to 1,342 residents and was considered an important commercial center on the east coast of Florida. During World War II, North Port played a key role as a munitions manufacturing plant that produced tanks, planes and artillery ammunition for the war effort. In 1945, following the end of World War II, Northport experienced rapid growth as new businesses opened up and many people moved into the area because of its excellent economic opportunities. By 1950, there were more than 2,000 residents living in North Port and it had become one of Florida's most vibrant communities
