North Port is a town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. North Port was founded in 1868 by J.C. Crouch and others as a small trading post on the now-missing barrier island of Mahon Key. In 1904, North Port became an incorporated town after being approved by voters in a referendum. The name "Northport" originated from the port on Mahon Key where goods were unloaded for shipment to other parts of the United States. The first residents of what would become North Port were J.C. Crouch, his wife Emma (née Harris), their son Amos Crouch, and their daughter Mary Jane Hixon (1863-1948). After surveying land around present day NorthPort on Mahon Key, they voted to form a town on December 1, 1904 with a population of 15 people. They named it Northport in honor of Commodore John Fenton USN (1837-1911), who had given commandant status to Fort Pierce during its early days and helped make it a thriving seaport community during its heyday under Governor Manuel Gonzalez de la Torre y Menendez (1799-1861). In 1907/08 Captain Harry Sledge (1885-1973) built one of America's earliest ocean liners - the SS George Washington - at anchor off Northeast Beach just north of today's downtown core while living ashore with his wife Alice and two young children: Lillian and Raymond Sledge Sr., both born in 1906 aboard the ship which would serve until her hull was sunk by Japanese submarines off Leyte Gulf on July 10th 1945 while escorting allied forces through World War II; Harry PSleye later served as captain emeritus for American Airlines before passing away in 2003 Two years later when America Shipping Lines merged with Southern Railway Company to form Penske Railroad Corporation, NWP rebranded itself Penske Railroad Corporation within Southern Railway Company limits but continued to use Northwest Pier Park facilities located adjacent to Penske Yard until that company's merger into Penn Central Transportation Co., Incorporated effective May 3rd 1961 . At Penkethaven Yards operations moved ashore permanently November 12th 1959 so that all railroad infrastructure could be consolidated under one roof following Amtrak's nationalization that same year . With mainline rail service moving out into open fields west along US 1 near international airport terminal three following Penn Central breakup these yards lost their status as an important transportation center but continue operation todayalbeit less frequently due primarily to budget cuts projected over time This page is dedicated solely to Penkethaven Yards history & nostalgia!
