Ormond Beach was founded in 1892 by J.L. Ormond and his wife, Julia. The name comes from the Indian word "oronda," meaning "shore of the orange tree." The Ormonds owned a citrus grove that they used to produce oranges for local markets. In 1903, the Ormonds donated land to the City of Miami for use as a public park. The city constructed three tennis courts on this property in 1911-12, and also built a baseball diamond in 1926. In 1938, the City added a swimming pool and beachfront hotel to the park complex. In 1949, Ormond Beach was annexed by Miami Beach and became part of its city government. The Ormonds were natives of County Cork in Ireland and came to America in 1846 when they were married into an American family that had immigrated from Cork. They settled near Mobile, Alabama, before buying land at or near Ormond Beach on Biscayne Bayou in 1852. J.L.'s father died soon after arriving here and J.L., who was then only 15 years old, took over running the farm operation while his mother stayed behind with their five children (two boys and four girls). By 1860, there were more than 100 people living on or around what is nowOrmond Beach Avenue; many of them farmers who grew crops such as corn, cottonseed oil/olefins (from soybeans), sugarcane,and sorghum on their properties which they sold to ship out to Cuba or Venezuela during hard times during the days of slavery before those countries abolished it! In 1892 J L ORMOND & FAMILY donated land east of US Hwy 1 for Park development including Tennis Courts & Baseball diamond etc J L ORMOND's death left HIS widow Julia TO take care OF THE FARMING & PARK OPERATIONS until Her son JOHN LORMONT came HOME from WW1 aged 20 yrs old in 1939!!! John had been born IN 1922 so he WAS already elderly WHEN HE RETURNED Home from World War 1!!!!! So much for separating fact from fiction......... Since becoming mayor of MIA BEACH 1919-1938 JOHN has sponsored numerous civic events throughout town INCLUDING SALE OF PEPPLEWOOD HOUSE which is now home Of Mrs KELLY SMITH whose ancestors lived HERE FROM 1793 thru 1865 ALSO DONATED LOT BELOW WATERFORD STREET FOR PUBLIC PARK !!!!! It is said That This Lot Was Chosen Because It Was Nearby To Where Dr David Levy's Office Is Now located
