Worth - bought from David Ewing a tract of land east of what is now Oviedo Township on the St Johns River which became known as Worth Plantation due to its abundance of sugarcane trees. By 1840 there were over 100 slaves working at Worth Plantation including many free Africans who had been brought over from Africa by Capts John Fenton and Isaac Hill early in that century for slave trading activities along the Gulf Coast slave trade route through Latin America Station near Mobile Bay Georgia . Many African Americans also worked as field hands or house servants throughout much of antebellum Florida In 1844, during construction of Fort Brooke near present-day Oviedo, local native Manuel Ortiz built one thousand five hundred feet long earth works called Lajitas using hand tools with only three men working at any given time because he owned alluvial gold mines nearby that provided more than enough ore to pay for his labor force! His accomplishment has been recognized statewide with an annual award presented by The State Historical Society Of Florida named "Lajitas Award" In 1861 Confederate troops burned down Government House in downtown Oviedo while Mayor James Buchanan was inside attending a meeting about how to handle an upcoming attack by Confederate forces against Fort Brooke This event helped start what would become known as “The Battle Of OvIEDO” which ended with Union forces taking control over most of downtown and ending Reconstruction efforts in south Floridas Shortly thereafter Ole Miss students began landing here winter term 1870-71 under Confederate command intent on stealing clothes and supplies being sent back to Tallahassee so General Robert Ewell could arm and equip his army besieging Tampa When Union General John Pope arrived late January 1870 attempting to rallock Tallahassee he encountered heavy resistance leading Pope into believing he might be able to garrison Tallahassee without fighting until reinforcements could arrive After several days Pope capitulated unconditionally leading to Second Seminole War whereupon General Robert Ewell ordered general stores taken away from Palm Beach County residents resulting in open rebellion against Union military rule occurring throughout south Flaveland]
