Oviedo is a small town in southwestern Florida, located on the Gulf of Mexico. It is one of the oldest communities in this area and has been inhabited by people for over 10,000 years. In 1957, Oviedo established its own police department which continues today as part of the City of Oviedo Police Department . In 1984, Oviedo hosted its first international shooting competition called SHOTGUN Safari which attracted participants from around the world . Oviedo, Florida is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Oviedo is located on the Apalachicola River and is about 36 miles (54 km) northwest of Jacksonville and 25 miles (41 km) northeast of Tampa. Oviedo was founded in 1836 by Captain John Sledge as an outpost on the Apalachicola River for exploration and trade with Native American tribes living along that river. It became a post office in 1859 and grew rapidly during the mid-19th century as sugarcane production increased in central Florida. After providing education to Seminole children from 1855 until their removal to Indian Territory in 1898, Oviedo attracted white settlers during Reconstruction era following Gaines' Alabama victory over Confederate forces at Magnolia Field on July 12, 1865. The town's growth accelerated after World War II when new sugar plantations were developed nearby; however, economic decline has led to its current status as a small community with limited development potential. The first white settler in Oviedo was Augustus Crain who arrived in 1837 and built his home on what is now Fourth Street near present day Broadway Avenue. In 1840 he married Sarah Robberson who also came from Mobile Alabama while Augustus was working on a plantation there before moving upriver to what would become Oviedo under Captains John Sledge and James Cook respectively. Captain Cook's landfall at "Oviedo" marks one of many points along this portion of the Apalachicola River where travelers stopped for refreshment or rest during their journey downriver from Georgia or Tennessee towards Spanish Fort/Mobile Bayou St Johns Ferry Landing north of Pensacola which served as an alternate route for steamboats transporting goods upstream towards Spaintown/Fort Pickens below Mobile Bayou St Johns Ferry Landing where they were unloaded onto smaller vessels called catamarans which transported goods back downstream to Mobile Bayou Gasparilla Island past Spanish Fort Point Loma into Spanish Gulf off Escambia County just south of Pensacola Beach today visitors can still see several evidence markers that mark this point including public beaches Hurricane Andrew hit parts of Mobile Bayous coastal area leaving behind high ground levels tidal pools up to 20 feet deep some areas remain today more than 50 years later experiment has shown that these areas are not impacted as much by tides making them prime locations for attracting marine life Underwater Archaeology has documented significant ruins dating back 3rd century BC

In 1912, the University of Florida moved from Jacksonville to what is now Oviedo with initial classes being held at an old chicken barn on Elm Street. Many buildings still stand in Oviedo today including the original dormitories and athletics facility known as "The Swamp". The university shifted its campus again in 1951 when it became part of the state college system; however, most of the original buildings remain extant today. In 1917 Indian traders living around Fort Walton Beach sold land that became part of what would become Oviedo after they were driven out by US troops during World War I. The town started as a small community with just a few homes and businesses. Development continued slowly until the late 1920s when a major landing port for passengers coming into Jacksonville was developed nearby which led to more growth within the community infrastructure such as roads and schools. In 1935, huge citrus fields were developed around SR 3 near present day Bradford Park Boulevard; this led to some growth within local housing stock as families began moving into larger houses closer to work commencing at banks across SR 3 from where they could watch oranges ripen all year round! During World War II much activity took place along SR 3 due to military testing activities going on adjacent property including numerous airfields used by both Axis forces during WWII while also providing access points for supplies entering/ leaving Jacksonville Naval Base; many local businesses benefited from this activity including those that operated along SR 3 such as Piggly Wiggly grocery store which opened its doors just off Bradford Park Boulevard opposite Old School Elementary School! The postwar years saw continued development taking place with more people moving into town limits bringing jobs and residential inventory values rocketing upward ever since!2002 marked 50 years since segregation ended when African Americans seeking education or employment opportunities finally had access not only throughout Gainesville but also within town limits itself making Oviedo one RIghtto liveable Black Town;2003 saw construction begin on what would ultimately be known as "Civic Center" paralleling US Highways 441 & 436 serving as both primary transportation arteries through town limits becoming another key advantage enjoyed by residents who resided close enough for easy access but far enough away from downtown areas yet still able to walk/bike or take public transport! 2005 marked yet another milestone when brand new elementary school built adjacent to Citrus Bowl Stadium jumpstarted redevelopment beginning immediately upon opening followed quickly by 2 other high-rise developments – one market rate & one belowmarket – adding even more diversity & value to an already well-developed community complete with over 85% single family dwelling units currently under construction or planned!!
