When the Palatka Gun Club was founded in 1906, it was the first handgun club in Florida. The club met on a weekly basis to discuss gun safety and to shoot handguns. In 1912, the Palatka Pistol and Rifle Club incorporated as a 501(c)3 organization. In 1916, the Palatka Rifle and Pistol Club changed its name to the Palatka Gun Club. At this time, there were only two firearms stores in town- one located on US 41 and one at 114 N Main Street. The Gun Club made several donations from its memberships to local schools, hospitals, fire departments, churches and other organizations for use in teaching children about firearm safety. On November 2nd of 1920, President Woodrow Wilson signed into law “An Act To Regulate Commerce With Foreign Nations” which required all dealers in guns selling outside of America to obtain a license from the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF). This law limited gun ownership within America by prohibiting anyone under 21 years old from owning or possessing a handgun. Palatka, Florida is a small town located in Monroe County, Florida, on the Palatka River. The population was 992 at the 2000 census. The town was first settled in 1821 by Elisha Key and his family as part of what is now known as the Keys. In 1826, John Chafee founded Chafee's Station on the river and named it after himself. By 1829, most of what is now Palatka had been developed and renamed Key West. In 1861, while fighting in the American Civil War, General George Buell passed through Key West on his way to Tampa Bay. He stopped at Chafee's Station for dinner and left behind a letter addressed to "Dear Sir": "I am greatly impressed with your neat log cabin here among us... I have never seen anything like it before or since I have been around these parts." After the war ended in 1865, many Union soldiers returned home and began settling in Key West; some of these men took up property near where Chafee's Station still stands today. In 1868-69 John Ladd purchased land northwest of town from James Aulds; he named it Ladd Landing after himself. That same year Samuel Ballard built a two-story brick house on Fort Gaines Road just north of present day University Avenue (now White Street). It remains one of key highlights in Palatka history because it served as a local courthouse during prohibition era law enforcement activity which took place across much of south central Florida during that time period

Over time, Palatka became a small town with a population of around 100 people. In the 1920s, the Palatka Post Office was opened and served the community until it closed in 1930. In 1948, Palatka became an unincorporated community within Polk County when it was created as part of the new county boundaries. The community continued to be administratively part of Polk County until its closure in 1970. Today, there is no active community located in Palatka and its residents are scattered throughout other areas of Florida. However, some remnants of the original Palatka community still exist today including a small shopping center that remains open on Saturday mornings for local shoppers.
