The first person to live in Palm Bay was J.C. Beasley, who arrived in 1887. Beasley built a cabin on the present site of the city's jail in 1892. The town was named for John Fenton, an early settler. In 1907, Palm Bay became part of Miami-Dade County and was incorporated as a city on November 1, 1912. On November 3, 1916, Hurricane Andrew struck the area and created a great deal of destruction along the coastlines of both Miami-Dade County and Broward County. The storm also caused extensive damage to homes and businesses in Palm Bay. As a result of the storm, many people left the city and its rapidly growing population began to scatter throughout other parts of South Florida. By 2002, only a few hundred people remained in PalmBay - most of whom lived within walking distance of the city center or work areas located close to major highways that served as travel routes into and out of palm bay.
