In the early 1800s, the area that is now Palm Coast was a small island in the Florida Keys. The area was first inhabited by Native American Indians and later by Spanish colonists. In 1821, Captain Manuel de la Vega discovered and named the islands in this area after himself, as part of his exploration of the region. Because of its isolated location, Palm Coast remained undeveloped for many years. However, it did not stay that way for long – in 1875, Capt. Aubrey Lovett established a whaling station on Stilts Point on nearby Key Largo Island. Because of this activity, and because there was no commercial shipping available to transport goods to or from Palm Coast, General John C. Fort became interested in developing this island into a settlement. He purchased land from the Indian chiefs who owned it and began construction on what would become Fort Myers Beach – one of America’s earliest settlements. Although development at first proceeded slowly due to lack of resources, fortuitous events soon led to increased trade with adjoining communities and new opportunities for industry when refrigeration equipment arrived from Europe during World War I (1914-18). This new technology allowed manufacturers such as Jardine Matheson & Co., Philips Electronics Company, Dow Chemical Company and others to set up plants onshore on artificial reefs formed by coral growth during high tide deposits along Biscayne Bayou (now part of Miami Dade County). During World War II (1939-1945), Fort Myers Beach became an important military base used by both United States Navy personnel stationed there as well as Japanese forces who were interned here during the war. This period also saw explosive growth within local businesses including those related to shipbuilding and naval supplies; these industries are still represented today through companies such as AAF Instrumentation Corporation and Jardine Matheson & Co., both headquartered in Fort Myers Beach! When peace finally came about 1945 following World War II, interest turned back towardsFort Myers Beach proper instead of expanding outwards into adjacent Miami neighborhoods like PortMiami did subsequently! In 1922, another important development came about when citrus growers (among them Jerald Vail) bought property east of University Drive NW and developed it into Chiquita Parkland Blvd., one of Palmcoast's most central commercial areas today as well as its only shopping mall with an over-the-bridge gasoline station/convenience store complex located within walking distance of almost all homes along University Dr., plus several movie theaters and two golf courses nearby - making it one of America's earliest shopping malls! In 1949, Tropical Storm Donny struck Seminole County just north of Palm Coast; much damage occurred including many lossof life due to flooding resulting from high winds gusts up to 100 mph (160 km/h). Donny formed near Jupiter Island off Tampa Bay before slowly moving northwestward until hitting Palmdale Reef about 8 pm EDT that night near mile marker 191 on US Highway 1A (now US 41), causing catastrophic flooding across sections of palm trees adjacent to water surfaces up to 12 feet deep where power lines crossed streams beneath limbs or lay buried under roots above water level; total death toll reached 9 with many more injured who lost everything from homes, cars & boats through exposure to salt water soup inside doors & windows! Many people evacuated inland such as my father-in-law’s house on Buddy Holly Boulevard northeast of downtown Kissimmee – we went into storage upstairs until prior morning when everyone left 3 days early for Daytona Beach where I took my brother-in-law’s car & drove home empty handed! Irma opened our door while we were driving away unannounced one day later !! A very sad story indeed !! After Irma made landfall she turnedNE approximately paralleling US 41 before crossing back over into Florida near Sanford just after midnight local time Tuesday November 16th ; this reopens old storm scars exactly 50 years later !! We are blessed every year with “Hurricane Floyd” which incidentally coincides exactly next week too !! Now THAT'S something you could actually SEE !!!

After several years of construction, Fort Moultrie opened in 1827 and served as a military post until it was destroyed by fire in 1840. In 1889, Miami County was organized from parts of Dade and Miami counties. The county seat became downtown Miami and Palm Coast developed along its southern border. By 1920, palm trees were being cultivated throughout much of central Florida for their fruit crop; however palm oil production did not take off until the early 1970s when new technologies made palm oil more environmentally friendly than other oils
