Gun targets have been a part of the community in Panama City Beach, Florida for over 100 years. The first Targets were located on 3rd Avenue South and 12th Street West. These early Targets were used to shoot practice for the local militia. The Targets continued to be located in this location until they were moved to their current location at 9255 S US-1 after a fire destroyed the original Targets building in 1923. The first Targets building was built by J.L. White who operated it from 1892 until 1912. The second Targets building was built by Wm Aiken who operated it from 1912 until 1916. The third target building was built by Hap Arnold who operated it from 1916 until 1922. It is interesting to note that all three buildings are still standing today, evidence that target shooting is a traditional activity in this community which has been around since before guns were invented! The fourth target building was built by Arthur Epps and his family who operated it from 1922 until 1951, when it was destroyed by a fire which occurred in the lot next door! It is interesting to note that all four buildings still stand today, evidence that target shooting is also a traditional activity in this community! In 1951, construction began on the current target building which replaced the previous one which had burned down months earlier! This new target building has been in operation since 1953 and continues to serve as an important part of our community today! Today, Target Shooting remains an important part of our community with its history and tradition dating back more than 100 years! In 1830, when United States troops invaded Mexico during its revolution against Spain, they discovered this coastline while looting Mexican ports along the Gulf of Mexico coast: They named this region Panama after General Manuel Noriega’s victory over Spanish forces at the Battle of Aburrucán (now called San Juan). As American troops continued being deployed into Central America during these years (1846-1847), more soldiers discovered this beautiful stretch of coastline – including Captain James Cook when he sailed past from Australia on his second circumnavigation in 1770! At various points along our coastline throughout history various groups have made claims to control or own either part or all of our shoreline: Spaniards claimed everything north; Native Americans controlled portions east and south; both groups claimed parts west until annexation by Florida in 1821 gave us our current location!
