Plant City is located on the east side of Lake Okeechobee, about 25 miles (40 km) south-southeast of downtown Jacksonville and 20 miles (32 km) north-northwest of Gainesville. The first settlement in Plant City was made by English colonists in 1795. The town was originally named "New Town" after British General John Nicholson's landing there that year. In 1821, Plant City became a separate county under Florida statehood and it has been continuously incorporated as a municipality since then. In 1902, A&P grocery store founder James Dickey donated land to build what would become his company's corporate headquarters and today the headquarters still stands tall with its original architecture from that time period: a three-story Colonial Revival style building designed by architect Clarence Ewing Healy with brick veneer and limestone trimming. The town quickly became a manufacturing center for local cotton, citrus, and livestock industries. In 1912, Plant City was incorporated as a city and developed into a major center for trade and industry in Florida. The city's economy grew rapidly during the 1920s and 1930s with heavy investment from numerous businesses including Citrusland Rubber Company, United States Steel Corporation, National Electric Railway Company, Gulfstream Airlines, and Hills Brothers Tobacco Company. However, during World War II Plant City suffered significant damage from the bombing of Pearl Harbor which destroyed many of its businesses and residences. After the war plants closed or were mothballed as competition from other regional cities sprung up in postwar Florida.
