Punta Gorda, Florida is a census-designated place located in Pinellas County, Florida. The population was 2,951 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Punta Gorda Naval Air Station is located on the island and provides military services to the area. The first Europeans to visit Punta Gorda were Spanish colonists who landed there in 1565 by sailing from Havana, Cuba. In 1795 a small mission was established here by Father Miguel de la Boca and his followers under leadership of José Francisco de los Cobres. The mission was abandoned in 1802 when HMS Bounty took possession of it as part of an expedition to find new coffee sites in North America. A lighthouse and harbor were built at Punta Gorda by Captain James Cook during his second voyage around Cape Horn in 1778–79 for navigation purposes only; he failed to find any coffee resources thereabouts. After Cook's death, Samoa granted sovereignty over Punta Gorda Island to Spain on 5 December 1800 pursuant to Treaty of Paris which ended the American Revolutionary War (1775–83). In 1834 Englishman John Stroud discovered coconut oil while searching for saltpeter mines near Pensacola Bay; he named it after himself – Stroud's Land (later renamed Stroud Point). Coconut oil production began here soon after but only local merchants and sailors used the oil because its price was too high for imports from Europe. By 1865 alligator hunting had become such an important sport here that Governor David Levy founded what would become known as "Gulfport Park" on 8 November 1865 with land gifted by Thomas Edison for use as a port town for Gulf Coast shipping interests.– GPTX Incorporated became world’s largest private container carrier when itsoperated terminals opened at Port Canaveral/Orlando International Airport on 1 January 2002 . Punta Gorda got its start as a plantation community during Reconstruction following the Civil War (1861–65). Most white settlers came from Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and other Southern states looking for cheap labor during Reconstruction period; some black families also moved into this area during this time period but most left when conditions improved later on.– Sugar plantations continued operation until 1926 when they were replaced by citrus groves.; Development along Channel Drive caused many homes and businesses along this street to be destroyed or displaced between 1925 and 1945 due to US Army Corps of Engineers' construction Project called "Mendenhall Straight". Many residents chose not to return years later because their properties had been repossessed.; One example of post World War II rebuilding occurred when thousands of troops arrived in 1947 seeking jobs related directly or indirectly to defense industries such as shipbuilding., Although much has changed since then especially with regard accommodation needs given that so many people have relocated here over time – today's Population: 2,951

Punta Gorda, Florida is a small town on the island of Hispaniola in the southern Caribbean Sea. The town was founded by Spanish colonists in 1763, and was named for Punta Gorda, an offshore cape that lies to the east of the town. The original settlers were mainly from Spain but there are also some English and French people living in Punta Gorda today. The first settler to arrive in Punta Gorda was Francisco de la Cueva y Arellano who arrived on July 8, 1763. He had come with a group of nine others including his brother Miguel de la Cueva y Arellano and Manuel Diaz de Castro. After landing they built a small fort at what is now known as La Fortaleza (the Fortress). They soon realized that they needed more food so they began trading with other islands in the area. In addition, they started planting tobacco and cotton plantations near their fort. In 1765 Pedro Menéndez de Avilés discovered sugarcane growing on Punta Gorda and he decided to set up a plantation here too. By this time there were about sixty people living in Punta Gorda. In 1768 Alonso Fernandez y Gómez erected a chapel dedicated to San José del Carmen which served as the church for all of Hispaniola until 1821 when it was replaced by the present-day cathedral building which stands next to Fort Charlotte where British forces landed during World War II. In 1814 Juan José Crespí sailed into these waters with his fleet looking for new land sources after finding evidence that there could be wealth down Under He sighted an oil wellhead off shore called "Santa Maria" and decided to establish himself here as an oilman instead of returning home empty-handed like his predecessors had done before him This decision paid off as early production commenced at " Santa Maria" making it one of the most successful Utopian settlements ever established on Hispaniola When Spanish troops under General Antonio López Yepes invaded Cuba in 1815, Crespí knew he had found something valuable; however, he didn't stop at just Oil production though! He also established another colony called Tenedos (later renamed Bonita) opposite Santa Maria producing rice and goods for local traders while still using " Santa Maria" for offshore petroleum exploration With increased profits came increased social tensions within Santiago Island because various elites saw themselves as having monopoly privilege over both agriculture/export production while labor allocation remained determined primarily through serfdom meanwhile residents within Tenedos struggled unsuccessfully against waves of newcomers led by Avelés who hoped eventually to create a self-governing society among its own people despite opposition from above
Punta Gorda, Florida was founded by Spanish settlers in the early 17th century. The first permanent English settlement in Punta Gorda was on the island of St. Johns (later renamed Jacksonville) in 1668. In 1776, during the American Revolution, Punta Gorda became an important naval and trading post for British sailors and merchants sailing to Havana from its port on Marco Island. After the Revolution, Punta Gorda experienced a period of rapid growth as a result of its strategic location and natural resources. By 1800, it had become one of the mostimportant settlements on Tampa Bay. It also attained international recognition for its role in hurricanes that struck Tampa Bay during these years: In 1819, a category 5 hurricane caused extensive damage to Punta Gorda; in 1833, Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of the town; and finally, Hurricane Floyd swept through the area in 1938 causing significant damage to both buildings and homes.
