Safety Harbor is a city located in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was reported to be over 100,000 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Palm Beach County after Jupiter and West Palm Beach. As of the 2000 census, Safety Harbor had a population of 86 people. The town of Safety Harbor was founded in 1892 by John Fenton and his wife Martha Lowrey. The first post office was opened in 1893. In 1896, Safety Harbor became a county seat and incorporated as a village under the name of Belle Glade until 1907 when it changed back to safety harbor. After World War I ended, many refugees from Europe settled in Safety Harbor and helped start what would become one of Florida's largest aerospace companies - Lockheed Martin Corporation (now Lockheed Martin Aeronautics). Many other businesses followed Lockheed’s lead during this time including Sunbeam Electronics, Stroudsburg Steel Company and National Broadcasting Corporation which all operated out of Building 2 on North Main Street between 1909 and 1957 while their parent companies were merged into Westinghouse Electric Corporation which moved its headquarters to Raytheon Missile Systems Place in 1958. After years of being overshadowed by neighboring Jupiter – nicknamed “The Metropolis” due to its size –Safety Harbour saw significant growth starting around the turn of the century thanks to two things: an increase in traffic caused by new resorts built along State Road A1A (now US 1) just east of town; as well as contributions from civic boosters such as Mayor Harry Gaskill who saw opportunity for Growth Enhancement fund opportunities available through local development districts created throughout Palm Beach County following passage of legislation authorizing them by then-Governor Frank Graham on November 3rd, 1990 through ballot measure Measure M (population 95% black) This first wave of economic development brought much-needed jobs and investment that has continued today with various types Offshore Marine Services being established here since 2002 as an anchor tenant at Town Hall Square shopping center adjacent to Canaveral Naval Station/Marine Corps Base where truck repairs are now conducted daily using state-of-the art equipment while also providing essential services like water & wastewater systems upgrades; power plant operations; carpentry; engineering services; storage space for materials used during construction projects etc.–all partaking in what has come to be known simply as The Build Zone . On October 15, 1938, the town of Safety Harbor was organized. The first post office opened in the town on November 18, 1938. The town's first census was taken in 1940. Safety Harbor experienced its first tornado outbreak on December 3, 1940. The towns first fire department was established in 1942. In 1944, a secondary school opened in the town and it had seven students. In 1945, a bank opened and Safety Harbor became a full-fledged city. On November 1, 1949, a water tower was built in the town and it served as the safety valve forSafety Harbour Creek which ran through the town. On October 25 of that year, an F5 tornado touched down within Safe Harbor township boundaries and killed three people (the most damage ever done to Safety Harbor).
