Sebring is a town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola-Ft. Walton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded on November 3, 1892 by J.W. Sebring and his brother Rufus Sebring as a small farming community on the east bank of the St Johns River in what is now Escambia County. The first post office was established in 1892 and named for John Wesley Sebring, Sr., who had settled there four years earlier. The name "Sebring" may be derived from Spanish meaning "to sit down", or "situated near," referring to its location on an east-west stream where many settlers could Sitting Bull's people gather water during their buffalo hunts across the river from present day Pensacola. In 1902, J.W.'s son Earle Wylie Sebring opened a general store in what is now downtown Sebring and began serving residents of both towns; he continued to do so until his death in 1984. In 1906, Jens Hesselgren became the first mayor of Sebring after being elected unopposed to a two-year term following the resignation of James Ahern Jr.. Hesselgren served until 1951 when he was succeeded by Wiley Patey as Mayoraltycontinued uninterrupted until 2001 when selection for seat made by then Governor Jeb Bush ended with no candidates receiving more than 50% of the vote which caused 5 council members (3 form city government) to step down including Mayor Patey who announced he would not seek re-election because it would have been “a close tie” with City Hall Staff (1 full time). On July 1st 2003 Earle Wylie Selmer reopened his father's store located at 202 Main Street as well as adding a Post Office and added 7 acres (28 hectares) of land to back up Main Street between 2nd Avenue North and Third Avenue South becoming known as Selmer Park today! Sebring is a city in Florida, United States. The population was 22,471 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first human settlement in what would become Sebring was established about 1800 by Captain John Butler and his brother Samuel Butler on an island in Lake Apopka near today's intersection of US 1 and SR 746. They named the place "Island Inlet" because of their difficulty getting supplies to the mainland from nearby mainland Pensacola. A post office called "Island Inlet" was established in 1825, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1888. In 1907, landowner George Wiggs donated 4,000 acres (1 km²) of undeveloped swampy land south of Sebring to the City of Orlando for municipal use as part of a public works program which included building the First Orange County Courthouse, then known as courthouse square. The land now forms most of downtown Sebring. On November 15, 1912 Sebring became one of many incorporated municipalities within newly created county government under authority granted by Statute No.. 993rd Fla., chapter 823 (1912). Municipal incorporation ceremonies were held at City Hall on December 2, 1912; incorporation numbers for both Kissimmee and Sanford were concurrently assigned that day. Businesses located north or east of Main Street became subject to Sanford jurisdiction while those located west or south were controlled by Kissimmee; this arrangement continued until 1959 when Sanford took over all business east or west of Main Street from Kissimmee municipality effective January 1st through December 31st inclusive date excepting businesses within 500 feet (150 m)of any school property owned or operated by either city; thereafter only commercial properties within 500 feet (150 m)of any church property owned or operated by either city are considered for taxation under these regulations On October 1st 1915 Mayor Edward Aherns proclaimed a state emergency due to war conditions with Spain . The proclamation authorized all citizens who possessed firearms to take them into custody without paying taxes until hostilities had ended’ . This emergency decree provided amnesty for anyone who had registered with the sheriff’s department prior to its effective date . pistol permit requirements did not change from prewar days but shotguns could be registered now also Tax stamps were no longer required since 1917 However tax returns must still be filed even if you do not owe anything
