The first permanent Spanish settlement was at St. Augustine, on a cape that is now called DeSoto Beach. In 1565, the Spanish crown awarded land to Manuel de Key Largo for his military services in the Reconquista of Mexico. At this time, Key Largo was one of the most wealthy men in Florida and had developed a large sugar plantation near Pensacola. In 1672, Spain ceded Florida to England as part of the Treaty of Paris following its victory over France in the Seven Years’ War. English colonists began arriving in what is now Jacksonville during this period and named it after their new countryman – James Jackson (1745-1827). The area around St. Augustine became known as Jacksonville because Englishmen built an Anglican cathedral there in 1795.
