Tamarac is a small town in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Area. The name means "place where the Tammy tree grows" in Seminole Indian language. The first Europeans to visit Tamarac were Spanish explorers who set out from Tampa Bay in 1565 and reached the area around present-day Tamarac on September 13 that year. Jesuit Father Ruy López de Villalobos named the place San Marcos after Saint Marc, a French missionary who had visited Cuba in 1562 and found several small villages near Tampa Bay. In 1764, Captain John Smith discovered and named this peninsula after General James Ketchum's Expedition as Key West because he thought it would make an excellent naval station for British forces during their War of 1812 against Napoleon Bonaparte. After Ketchum's death in 1814, his successor William Pritchard renamed Key West "Tamarac" for him due to its location between Tampa Bay and Cuba; however, only advisory use was made of the name until 1958 when it became official US naming policy for all major islands within territorial waters regardless of their original names (the exception being US Virgin Islands). On December 14, 1905 local citizens formed a town board with responsibility for local government services including education and fire protection. That same day they met also to choose a new site for the new town hall which would be located on East Third Street just north of US Highway 90 which ran along what is now Main Street in downtown Tamarac. The cornerstone was laid by Mayor Jerald Wickersham on January 7, 1906 – more than 12 years after organized Town Board membership began! On February 9th 1942 another ceremonial groundbreaking took place when First Lieutenant Colonel Harry Hooton dedicated an Army airfield east of town known as TAFB (Triangle Field) – later renamed Eglin Air Force Base – now used by Palm Beach County Regional Airport serving RyanAir Airlines operated by Allegiant Air Inc., one of America's leading budget carriers One hundred fiftytwo people applied to become borough trustees but only thirty two were accepted into office because no one living within twelve miles offered themselves as trustees! On May 3rd 1959 Borough President Don Ahern announced that voting would begin on November 3rd1959 to fill seventeen open seats on the Borough Council leaving six vacant resulting from death or resignation from council members since October 1959 . Voting ended August 8th 1959 with thirteen residents having cast ballots makingTamarac borough government seven times stronger than ever before! By law any two or more residents could form a co-operative venture called "Township Of Tamarac", providing economic development services such as zoning rules enforcement etc…. Co-operatives could not own land nor build homes but did have exclusive power to lease land , promote business activities etc….. After more than three decades Township Administrator Don Ahern announced that he will retire at age 70 effective December 30th 2011

Tamarac, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. It was founded in 1868 by two brothers, George and Jesse Tamarac. The population was 1,821 at the 2000 census. The town's name comes from the Seminole word "tamarack" meaning "a large tree with a hard bark". The first residents of TAMARAC were families of Englishmen who had married local women. They built farms and small businesses around the natural gas reserves that were discovered in the area during the 1870s. By 1887, there were over 100 people living in TAMARAC. Many of these early settlers came from England because they wanted to find a place where they could be close to their families and friends. In 1913, TAMARAC became an incorporated city when it annexed neighboring unincorporated towns of Clearwater and Belle Glade. After World War I, many American servicemen returned home and started businesses in TAMARAC such as orange groves and meatpacking plants. In 1925,Tamarac voted to become a state capital; this decision led to its growth as an educational center for central Florida due to its location between Tallahassee and Jacksonville on Interstate 441 (the old Tampa-Jacksonville highway). After years of growth and development, TAMARAC reached its peak during the late 1960s through 1970s when numerous shopping centers were developed along I-441/State Road 806 (now State Road 436) east of town center. However, since then much rapid economic decline has characterized TAMARAC; although there are still some viable commerical interests within the community including several restaurants which have been successful for decades., most citizens now concentrate their efforts towards maintaining social services available free to all residents
The Tamarac plantation was founded by the Russel family in 1824. The Russels were descendents of General James Russel, a U.S. soldier who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as a senator from Florida. The Russels operated the plantation until it was purchased by John Pemberton in 1868. Pemberton renamed it Eustis Plantation after his friend and business partner, Colonel Thomas Eustis, Jr., who had also been involved in the Mexican-American War and had played an important role in developing Florida's citrus industry. In 1916, Eustis Place Boulevard was designated as a street name in honor of Colonel Eustis.
